Scrolling through this morning's in-box. Saw this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"An emerging telecommunications business is looking for a person to be the voice our customers hear when calling in. They will be the voicemail, on hold message and voice for our phone system. Language will be english. All Voice Gender and ages welcome.
Wave file required. 3- 5 minute recording."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Went to answer it.
279 people had responded!!!!!
Almost THREE HUNDRED VOICES wanting to do voicemail?

Hit 'delete'.
If I was looking for a voice for my 3-5 minute voicemail system I think I'd have found it after about the first 25 or so, or would have given up.

Three hundred responses.
Sigh.

Yikes. Ditto to what you said, Scott.

Not that I would want to try after 300 people have put in for it, either.

Wonder what the drawing power of that particular lead was?

I saw this one yesterday and responded with my usual ridiculously high rates and I was within the first 10 I believe. I did all of this a long time before I ever got the email about it. I just happened to be in a position to watch the lead in box. This was the case on all of the leads I responded to yesterday. I responded within the first 10 to 20 responses on all of them, all before I ever got the email. Then when I got the email I had to figure out if I had already responded.

Keith,

I wonder if responding with ridiculously high rates can potentially be a reason to have the potential clients give you a poor rating. I gave a lot of thought to that and have begun to simply delete things outside of my budget. Anyone have any similar or opposing thoughts on this? I guess what I'm wondering is if its worth educating these clients in this way; at the risk of a bad rating....?

Well I was only joking about the rates. If the job falls within my rate card I answer it. If not I delete it. Like that :30 sec local TV spot that came this morning for $100. I deleted it, then undeleted it and deleted it again. We should really be able to do a charge back to V123 for the trouble of having to do so. Smile Again, just joking.

Take it from me... if they so choose, a client can definitely give you a bad rating for answering with a generic demo when a custom is asked for. That was the mistake I made as a newbie (it was a while back, when the reply page allowed you to choose between your demo or browse) that led to my demise in ratings - see my post about talent ratings in the Pros section. V123 says this will be fixed in the new system though.

I don't know---maybe I am a hopeless optimist. I answer everything that falls into my $$ range. I don't let the numbers get me down. You can't assume that because you would have cast your voice within the first 25 or so, that's how all clients are thinking. Many can be extremely anal. I got a gig last month with AAA Motor Club and I was WAY down there on the response list. I say, if it doesn't compromise your price range, and you have the time, then go for it! Applause

Yeah, but Cira, a gig doing an AAA spot and 300 answers for a voicemail are like apples and oranges. I mean, fer cryin' out loud... we're talking an answering machine here! knüppeln

Sorry, help me out here, guys. Who gives these ratings, voice seekers? When do they rate? After listening to submitted auditions? And where's this rating displayed?

Thanks, and apols in advance, I'm sure.

Robert

Well, this is a very simple procedure, the system offers to the clients a way to rate the demos received.
Below you´ll see the view that clients have in the system and how they can rate your demo using the stars. When placing the mouse over each star (starting left to right) it will display " Unprofessional, Not good ,Just fine, Great.

That´s more or less how it works right now, the good news are that very soon we´ll see upgrades to this feature, making it easier for clients to rate the responses. and those will be available for the talents too review.

Hope this helps clarify.
