I was thinking about that this morning. Alan's is definitely a Shure 55 (probably a "PE" or "S" series. Colin's is of a slightly earlier vintage - I don't think Shure, though ... I think it's an EV 726. _________________ From the rocking of the cradle to the rolling of the hearse ... the going up was worth the coming down. - Kris Kristofferson

Let me ask you this about Audition. How do you keep all the source files straight? I'll pull a music bed, some EFX off an external drive and do some edits and it keeps wanting to save OVER THE ORIGINAL! I've tried to come up with a scheme to keep all the edited files for a session in one folder but it's nerve racking trying to make sure my originals are not being destructively saved over themselves. Drives me nuts. _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

I have both 1.5 and 2.0 installed but I can't get used to 2.0 yet. 1.5 just seems more responsive. So if you check that box, does it continually prompt you to save files when you exit? I am always so afraid to check "yes to all." _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

Everytime I read the various notes in a thread regarding digital editing software, I see all the difficulties associated with this program or that program and then all the notes telling how to work around all the problems - or the comments regarding how expensive it was to upgrade when the time came for revisions or fixes to some old problems.
Whhhoooooooey!
If you are doing voiceover work and not complex music production, ask yourself if you really need a multi track program or any other program with a long list of features that cost a bunch of money, take a long time to learn before you finally figure out that you don't need 'em and won't use 'em. Does it makes sense to spend megabucks for something like that?
I use an inexpensive ($45 USD) but very high quality program that is easy to learn and understand and it comes with a well thought out list of native digital audio editing and processing tools that work well - and it will host DirectX plug-ins with no muss, no fuss and without the hair pulling sessions we occasionally see being discussed.
The built in Noise Reduction feature is very effective - and easy to use. Unless the objectionable background noise is extreme, there is no perceptible loss of quality to the original once it is processed (unlike some other programs I have played with). Whenever the developer upgrades and improves the program, I get the upgrade free of charge - for life. I never did ask if that means his life or mine - perhaps it's one of those "whichever comes (goes?) first" kinda things.
Most of the time I record in glorious monaural and at times - when I'm feeling really daring and crave some excitement in my life - I will go to full living stereo. If I need to produce something that requires two or three or four music track changes and a handful of sfx, I can put it all together without need of six, eight, ten or twelve separate tracks.
It sure is nice to know that among all the ugliness, horror, pestilence, disease, drought, famine, wars and the general hunger, pain and misery in this world - I don't have to get all door slammin' / wall kickin' mad because my digital audio editing and processing software was way too expensive and a pain in the patoot.
It sure is nice to have something that just works right.

Not at all. Your comments are well worthwhile!
One of the first things a newbie will do is go looking for equipment and software - and end up with crap they don't need and can't use.
Three hundred dollars - or more - for software appropriate for recording and producing a symphony orchestra when what we are doing is straight voice? Even with a simple music bed or even more complex production, it makes no sense to buy expensive junk that you can't use - just to tell everyone how cool you are because you have the same software as was used to produce the latest trash track from Joe Flashinthepan.
I like stuff that works - especially if I can get it without spending outrageous amounts of hard earned cash to get it. |

I am a producer by trade. I want to be able to do true multi-track. I know many others don't need or want that capability.
I have not found ANY multi-track editors that are exactly how I'd like them to be (a mimic of an Orban Audicy) but I make due with Audition until I can get Pro Tools.
Multi-track is FUN. _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

Brian, don't tell me anyone thinks that Audition is better than Pro Tools! _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com
