Thanks Greg. I'm definitely going to give one of the NOS tubes a whirl in channel 2 for the "wooly, warmer" side, but there is something about the Tung Sol in that pre with the Heil that sounds decent for not much coin. Right now, I've decided to go with a signal chain that's cheap & cheerful that I like and enjoy using and then make the Great Leap Forward at the end of this year as my work is picking up.

The Echo is working out well, and check out El Blog for my full review of it. It should definitely hold me over for a while, and for the same money definitely sounds better than the Presonus, even with the gear I'm using.

Bring it on little man, bring it on.

Cool

Uhm, I haven't had a chance to listen to your other clips on this forum, but I'm hearing your computer, and some other background noise (you need to fix that most ricky tiki... you don't want to have to use processing to subdue it).

Next, you're sounding a bit brighter in that than I would like. This could be a lack of treatment in the room (most likely based on sound), could be the mic itself (I'm thinking not), could be the preamp (better chance), or could be the level at which you're recording (bit of a toss up, but it'd be the first thing I checked after properly treating the room).

You are exactly correct. I am working on getting a sound box (have a plan to build and will post if it works.) Secondly, my room is very bright (box will help). Right now in order to reduce the echo and the fan noises I am trying to use the 10 dB high pass filter on the mic. I think it works okay, quiets it down a lot and I think I am loosing a lot of the good of my voice. I should have my DYI box made tonight so I will repost then. I posted a few pics of my set up in another thread in
this room under Name "Help Please . . ." anyway, thanks for the advice. I am sure grateful.

If you have a pic of the internals of your computer, that'd help.

But... why no sound treatment IN THE CASE (Xoxide sells a good kit for less than $20).

Or... toss the thing in a cabinet or closet (with some mild treatment). So long as you can get good airflow, you're fine. If not, then a short period of time (while recording), then opening the door to allow for a continual air flow is a good idea.

I do not normally recommend keeping a DAW in the same room as where you're recording. I've got close to 30 years with computers (over 15 directly working with large-scale IS), and that was a major concern to me when I built mine a few months back.

Now I'm a bit on the edge (over if you ask most folks) so I did something to create a passively cooled system... works like a charm, but pricey if you were to go my route (RAID 0 + 1 SSDs, multiple CPUs, Crossfie, etc.).

BTW: what do you mean by "box"? Think gobos first, and move from there. Box is bad... too easy to go from one extreme to another. Take a peek at the Diamond series by vocalbooth.com. Play off angles to help deaden (but not outright kill) your sound. There's a reason that so many professional studios have their walls and ceilings at a slight angle (almost unnoticeable).

If you go with an actual box style, toss a gobo or additional treatment on the corners to mitigate the "dead zone" effect that so many prefab booths have.

Rock on!

Okay, I will try and get some pics, but pretty much I have no dampening in the case at all. I am going to to try rearranging everything and put up some sound boards. I am doing everything on the cheap so I was actually thinking that I would go to a local foam company and by the foam board from them straight out. Not from a music store (i.e Guitar Center). I think this would be a lot more economical.

Thoughts?

Hi Clinton,
Before you treat your room, experiment with mic placement all around your room to find out where is the least reflective area. Sometimes it's good to be in a corner facing out, and sometimes the best option with a room is to be facing into a corner if it's treated right. Is the room fully carpeted?

Also think about what furniture in your room reflects sound.
Some people have foam or panels all over their walls, and then they have their mic set up on a big wooden workstation with all kinds of monitors and gear on it. They might as well be speaking at a window.

good luck,
Lance

Quick way to find out.

Walk around the room, clap your hands at various points. If you get an echo or a splash, the it's the reflection from the room itself.

Regardless of how large your setup is, if you're recording in front of your recording desk, or all the gear, odds are you're going to have issues that require some work (as Lance said, it's very detrimental to what you're trying to do).

Quite literally, I have gobos in the my audition room to separate the control desk in that room from my stand. Otherwise, my sound would probably be reflecting off of everything there, which is not the kind of sound I'd prefer to have Wink

NP hun.

You can make 'em, or buy 'em. I have both and are used depending on need and personal tastes.

It doesn't fix everything, and if you're truly concerned... grab a professional.

I have built me something. It is my own version of the porta box. I had to do it on the cheep so this is how she stands. Also, her is a quick recording to show the difference. Thanks for all the help.

So what do you all think? Better? Same?

Agreed.

Three postings in this forum alone regarding the same thing?

Let's pick one and stay there for a while... makes me feel less like I'm having a case of deja' vu.

No worries... it's hard not to be excited when there's new gear kicking about.
