Well, Maggie, I know I couldn't have been too bad if I'm in your incomparable company in earning a 2.0. :} Boo hiss on that seeker.
Colin and Cira, LOVED the San Diego spot! Well read, acted and produced! Is that an audition or a finished spot? Sounds like a finished spot
Hmmm, the smile in the voice thing... seems like even when I'm *literally* smiling, I still don't *sound* like I'm smiling. And then I get ridiculous mouth sounds. Heck, my teeth squeak. One of these days I'll post an example and see whether everyone else can hear it too. I'm beginning to feel like I can't win. I need to try not to get depressed and instead look for ways to practice and improve on the problems. Getting feedback here is a good start...
Thanks everyone, I'll try not to be too grumpy. I really do appreciate the constructive feedback, and I know it's good for me in the long run...
Alexis

| Maggie...one more thing. I LOVE how you are able to do p's and b's so perfectly. It's something I struggle with and I hear how well you do it in every read. Amazing!!

Colin - wow, what a difference a little music bed makes! The first version definitely goes better mood-wise et al.... wicked kewl! .... and thank you for doing this!! You're such a peach!!
Ooops, almost forgot! Really liked your spot with Cira - you two have a good thing going there - good chemistry. You know what I mean! OK, I'll shut up now. Nice work

mine do too, when I smile while I read. Apple juice is my secret weapon. The pectin really helps keep the stickiness to a minimum!

Nope... I just "organize" through email. Phone patches are over-rated. Find someone who has so much talent (Cira in this case) so that you know that they will deliver what you need the first time and no phone patch is needed. Tryin' to convince the clients of that.

Kathleen - these were the exact keywords on the direction:
sophisticated, worldly, classy, smooth, refined, cool, authoritative, truthful, commanding, forceful
I don't see "gravitas" other than "commanding and forceful". Now, to me... classy, refined and smooth doesn't preclude a smile. Matter of interpretation I guess. As for my read turning chipper - that was because it was a completely different version that you were hearing, not part of the 1st... for variation... |
I understood that you were showing a variation, Maggie. I was specualting that maybe this particular company didn't want to hear anything that chipper based on their request. I definitely was not attempting to insult you. I think you sounded great!
As for the direction requesting "Gravitas" see both below and the attached pdf of the project.
The Project description reads as follows:
Project Description:
(Please note that Voice123 screens all projects before approving them, but does not proofread the project name, description, or script provided by the voice seeker) voice-over for a few lines in online fashion podcasts around 1 minute or even less. We are looking for a sophisticated voice that is authoritative, clear and commanding, not overly-cheerful. Your voice should have a certain gravitas, with the ability to be up-beat at times. If this works out, it will be a recurring opportunity.

Whew... good thing I didn't include the racier version! Well, as for uhh... the "experienced" part.. ::cough:: I guess I probably have a few years on you (as in, I'm older..). Both our versions work - it's just a matter of targeted demographics, know what I mean? I probably appeal more to a more mature generation (hopefully not octagenerians though! )

Maggie... but it's a little more than a music bed. It's a little "processing" as well.

No, no...I didn't take it that way. Sorry if I came across that way.

OK, not to beat a dead horse or anything.. but aren't "gravitas" and "up-beat" contradictory? Hence why I gave them 1 read that was more serious/classy/whatever and another that was more "up-beat" (how do you do up-beat without a smile or excitement? Beats me. No pun intended.)
I followed their direction. I dunno - I'm confused. (Or maybe they are)

Colin, can you fill me in on the details? Would love to know what you did (since it sounded so much better)

I too was a little conflicted based on the information...and subsequently my read was a tad flat because of the serious...but the ability to be up beat requirement.
I am very interested to hear if anyone from this board gets this award. I would love to hear what they were looking for.
I'm glad you weren't insulted Maggie. I always think I appear dry when I write and wonder if it comes across as unfriendly... I was just making sure that didn't happen.
Plus, I'm editing all weekend and get a little .....stressed...when I do it

I applied a little EQ as well. I find your stuff bassy Maggie so I tried to "fix it in the mix."
I could do even more with it if necessary.

It's hard to teach. I want you guys to understand something....
1. I am legally blind since birth. I can see well enough to walk around but I can't drive.
2. So.... I have incredible hearing. I am all about sound.
3. I have many years of experience in radio production.
I don't know how I could deliver a "magic pill" of how to make things sound right. I just do it. I know all the technical background but it would take a tome to explain it.
