Bob, I think that says it all. Clients guess. Experienced voice talents know...simply by knowing what interpretation is required. It is no different than great actors leaving the script and ad-libbing---9 out 10 times the Actor nailed the right feel and the right words to make it spectacular.

So they wanted "dark and mysterious but not Vincent Price." I was kind of just having fun with this one because I recognize the company and they never hire me even though I audition for everything they post. I thought it was really kind of a cool voice until I was listening back while finalizing my bid and realized I sound just like Sulu from Star Trek. Drag.

Erik,

I hear just a little Rod Serling in your second take. (I mean that as a compliment!) Here's my take, which received a 3 star rating from the client earlier today.

You put a sexier spin on that, Bob. Nice job.

Just once I would like to get one of the book gigs from these people. They always come to 123 and they always want to record at their place here in NY. It would be great to get my foot in the door there and try to work regularly for them.

Lee, your George Burns was practically dead-on!!! Here's my Gracie (oddly reminiscent of High Button Shoes!)

I wasn't going to answer any leads today, but this came in my box "elsewhere," and I literally jumped from my desk to record this...

If somebody had told me three months ago that I'd be trying to sound like this and get paid to do it, I'd've had a good laugh and forgotten about the incident. Now though, I've re-listened to my audition, and I like what I hear, but I just hope $client likes it enough to hire me!

Cira: You got even better as the read went on.....love the nasal!

Amanda: Chuckling over the kids voices....great!! Hope the client likes it!

Bob, Joe, Erik...loved your dark fever reads, Joe's twist was different right out of the gate....Erik, you seemed a bit stilted, as tho you were punching the same words, in a rhythmic sort of way, do you hear it?

Amy & Cira -- I like the vocal tone of both your Gracie Allen reads, but I think they would be even better if you both didn't sound quite so smart. There needs to be a little more ditziness. The trick is you can't sound like you're trying to play a "dumb blond" character because, while what she said often didn't make sense, Gracie always thought it did.
