Don,
this is really interesting. Once I learned about the use of the 416 in the VO industry, I remembered when I was a soundtechnician on a tv-station about 10 years ago. From time to time, we did some narrations or voiceovers, and we used a Sennheiser K3-U with what I believe was a ME40 head. We didn't know that we had a super VO mic outside in the drawer, as we of course were only using our 416 for booming purposses!
Now, I'm seriously considering the 416 as my next mic, but are also considering the Microtech Gefell M 930, which is widely used at the national radiostations here in Denmark.
Your little test really has got me thinking now...

Don
Come on but bring lunch. Shotgun Microphones come in two groups , Long and Short, the MKH 416 is in the Short category and is most often used on sound stage or very non reflective spaces. The hyper cardioid mic is really close in reach to a Short shotgun.
This after evening Eastern Time US I will post samples from SM 89 (long shotgun), AKG 451 EB with CK1 (cardioid), CK3(Hyper-Cardioid) and CK7(Long shotgun) Capsules. The 451EB has been reissued by AKG but has a fixed Cardioid Cap. Also a supper inexpensive Behringer ECM8000, Grove Tube condenser and if my wife will let me borrow it her US made Shure SM 75.
This group is not the average closet most VO talent has or needs. I have a business partner who has a studio space that we are going to optimize and this group is intended for studio tracking.

Here's a different flavor for the MKH-416: I'm nowhere near as up-front delicious like Don is.
Sennheiser MKH-416
Joemeek OneQ (Comp: 3:1, 25ms Attack, 1sec release - no EQ)
Presonus Firebox (At 48k 24bit, since apparently their 96k is a sham ).
Cubase SE3 (No plugins, processing, de-esser, etc.)
I intentionally read a piece that lends itself to sibilance, and didn't try to reign it in to show what the mic picks up. The mic is 5 inches away pointing down on a 45 degree-angle at my lip. The base of the mic is ahead of my right shoulder.
I also work as a field audio engineer for video/tv. I always use the Sennheiser MKH60 instead of the 416 in the studio, but for voiceovers, the MKH60 is a bit too dark.
Jacob, I'm thinking about the M930. What is your experience with it?

Jacob although I do like my MKH416 and it is awesome for certian applications.... I would go with the Gefell M 930 if i had to choose.
ED you are a Microphone Ninja my friend.... Can't wait to hear some more samples... I really enjoy listening to all the varities of microphones/equipment.
Lance .. wow.. clean and sweet:) luv it.
I hope more people post there samples of there microphone/equipment . this will give everybody a loose idea on the different sound colors that microphones offer.

None personally yet, but The National Broadcasting Corporation in Denmark (Denmarks Radio), TV 2 (the 2. national network in Denmark, which also have a radio network), The Voice (biggest commercial radio network in Denmark) and several production companies in Denmark all use them now. Most of them as replacement for the U87. It has literally become the new standard here. I actually believe the M 930 to be THE fastest selling microphone in history in Denmark. And hey, it's not THAT pricey...
I second Don's apinion, that it probably is the wiser, safe choice opposite the 416, but I just have to try a 416 on my own voice sometime. But, as my own Rode NTK is beginning to sound a little dull (I probably have killed it by smoking too "occasionally" in my studio), I think I'll have to look for a replacement sometime soon, and I guess it will be the M 930. The Neumann TLM 103 has also been in my thoughts, but they are priced about the same, and if the 103 was a better mic than the 930, I would think that alot of people made a big mistake, if you know what I mean...
On a different note, a funny thing is, that there seems to be a kind of hype evolving every decade about microphones, at least here in Denmark. 20 years ago, everyone here used the AKG 414, and that was my first mic, too. 10 years ago, Rode came on with the NT-2, and those who didn't use Neumann had to have them. Now, it's the M 930. Wonder, what we will be the next hottest thing 10 years from now

This my "Don" read. It has a slight dynamic process to eliminate some hiss.
This was done with the BC-104
Neumann BC-104/Shure SM48(Jingles, Singing, etc.)
Millenia HV-3B Preamp
Sound Blaster/Audigy 5.1 Sound Card
Sound Forge 8.0/Acid 5.0(multitrack)
Not the best in the world....
BTW, what would you think of this demo, had it been on the Shure SM48 mic?

Nobody really knows who invented it, as there were several known variants prior to the carbon microphone invented by Edison. It is a rather crude condenser microphone. The modern condenser microphone was created in 1916 by Wente as an improvement to the carbon microphone for use in telephones.
However, the first commercially available condenser microphone purely for recording purposes was created by Neumann back in 1938 (the CMV3 for those who are interested...)

Here's a sample of my Blue Snowball USB mic.
Please forgive the stuffed nose. Allergies are in full swing today...
Thank you so very much for starting this thread. I'm barely a 'toddler' at the techno side of this, and eager to learn. Thank you in advance for your input!
Also, this is completely dry. Please feel free to give me suggestions for compression/equalization. I'm using Audacity right now.

Hi Andy,
Both very nice sounding mics. I agree that the neumann is a little hotter So which do you prefer to use as primary?
That is some good inhaling. You can almost see the smoke curling out of your mouth as you exhale...

Jacob—I happened to know that you are considering the TLM these days so I decided to post these for you brother! Really.
JR—I tend to lean with the TLM for most short audio applications and the RODE for longer, pod casting--for example. I find it more forgiving of pitch and volume fluctuations without clipping once levels are set.
Kim—So nice to hear you other than in a spot! You have one of those rare and lovely female tones that doesn't slice and dice esses all over the place
