Kim--ROFLMAO! Actually I had to move the pop screen back in order to get the ruler in the photo.

Bobby--I dunno it sounds pretty clean to me but the best way to determine ambient noise would be to take an acoustical reading of it. I.e. record the "room acoustic signature" without the vocals.

Sounds like that TLM has a love affair with your voice brother--nice.

I liked the AKG 480-ULS combo, as well as the Groovetube..does nicing overhead make THAT much of a difference?..I was told by an engineer that it makes no difference at all..

Yes the position is vital to tonal quality of what is recoded. Microphone positing is an art and science. Recording engineers, who care about their recording secessions, work many hours trying out different placements for recording a multitude of things including the human voice. In fact some have learned special tricks to help them get better sound from certain instruments and they don’t share these tricks.

Most sound Mixers (location sound recoding engineer on movies) will always try to position the microphone overhead. Think of the body as the resonant thing that it is. Just as a guitars string is plucked and set into vibration, the sweet sound does not come directly over the string. The body of the guitar helps to shape the sound. Almost every instrument, including the vocal chords, have places on the body of the instrument that radiate a preferred sound quality. Another side benefit of over head placement is a less breath noise.

The chest cavity is where the low frequencies will come from and from the head the middle and high frequencies. Try placing the microphone aimed up at the mouth, then inline with the mouth and finally aimed down so it sees the mouth and chest. Listen on good speakers and make your decision about which one you like. It’s what you like that matters and the position of the microphone will help define the sound you like best.

Come to thing of it, if a person called him/her self an engineer and told me microphone position didn’t matter I would question how good an engineer he/she was. My personal recommendation is to find another engineer to get help from. Many of the contributors her have superior credentials in the engineering dept.

Maybe I aught to reconsider the GT AM52. I think that replacing the transformer with one from, say Cine Mag, might help it. But then Its not broken, why fix it. Very Happy

Ed,

Great test! So interesting to hear so many mics compared.
That 451/CK1 combo - wow!!! Noticed the complete lack of noise contra all the others. It may need just a liiiiittle tweaking at the top, but I really, really, really, really, really like it!

Max,

so nice to hear you speak "un-professionally", so to speak. Gotta love that accent.
However, I can see now why you asked for advice on the de-ess'ing issue, your "S"es really cuts through. Hmmm... Lemmethinkaboutit, and I'll be back.

By the way, the reason why I don't post a sample here too, is simply because my Rode NTK is sick... Sad It does NOT sound the way it should, probably suffering from my bad, bad habit of smoking in my studio. So a sample simply wouldn't be fair to Rode, as it actually was a nice mic once.
