Got one John, maybe I was a bit too close to it for this demo. I'll back off a little from now. Point taken, cheers.

Hey Mark,
Sounds better. A lot of that line noise is gone, but there is still a big amount of hiss.
I think the real ticket is going to be getting that iMic out of the chain. The mic doesn't sound bad, but it hard to get any real feel for the true sound with all that hiss going on. I'm assuming the iMic is what's causing some of the noise.
But hey, it's getting better.
You still getting the ART?

Nice mic...The only thing I don't like about the firewire solo is if you have 2 mics you have to get an Impedance Transformer,,, other than that nice setup..
Sound with firesolo not the same when not using the direct connection from the XLR port,, so if you have your fav mic you kind of wanna leave it as is and use the second one as a all round mic..
Don't remember the name of my mic..Will have to check,,, all I know is that it works..Before I use it there are about 10 takes of:
"This is a test to see if the microphone works"
Had the Fadeport by Presonus interfaced but it does not work with Soundtrack Pro, soooo since am not crazy about Prostool had to replace it with AlphaTrack..So far still works for fading audio recorded on the mic but took forever to get everything up and running..
It's not like one can buy the mic and just use it, hate the part of having to tweak everything so it works just right..Plus none of the drivers work straight from the box, you always have to search for the latest. Then after many crashes it worked...
How long did it take you to get your mic up and running?

I'm kind of amazed this thread is still going...hello...anyone still here?
Anyway, around the time this little show & tell began, I bought a new mic: AT4047. 6 months later, I think I hate it. (The last one I had was an MXL2006--a cheap-o $99 job, which now I miss terribly.)
It picks up all kinds of mouth noise, and I have to crank the pre-amp to get a decent level. I've posted an average sample...you'll get the point.
Based on the samples I've heard here, I like the Rode NT1A, Rode K2, The AT4040 (the famous mic #3 from Robert Jadah's test) and the Telefunken AK47. However, I think all of the samples were male. Does anyone have any suggestions for a condenser for a female who sounds like, well, me?
My chain: Me, AT4047, M-Audio FW410 Pre-Amp, Pro Tools.
Thanks.
Haneen

could be the settings of the mic... That's why I have more than one... Each setting has a different feature... The "o" is for the omini directional then there is the - or the + setting then there is the directional setting and then the ratio settings come into play...
so if you have the "o" setting with - you may get this verses that...
could be some simple settings ratio in protools..well have to c who comes up with the solution 4 you..
Sounds pretty good on the iphone.. Do u have a pop screen?

Louis,
I currently have the settings on 0db and the low/cut on "-". (The other options being -10db and "/". I must admit I haven't played with them, so that might be helpful.
I have a pop filter on it. I had also used a wind screen, but I thought the filter was more helpful, so I agree with you there.
Thanks for chiming in. I will try to play with the settings.

Haneen:
It's sounds a little shrill to me. Not warm. In my experience, about 20 years, most females sound great on a Electro Voice RE-20
dynamic mic.
To get a better, smoother sound than an RE-20 in a condenser mic,
you're going to have to experiment with $1000+ mics.
My experience comes with producing several top female VOs.
They always sound great on an RE-20.
I've tried several AT mics. Just OK.
Didn't you have a Shure SM7B?

Bill,
You have quite a memory. I did have that particular Shure--which I sold to our fellow talent Jacob Ekstrom, which he promptly sold once again. (Jacob--if you're reading, I hope you don't mind me mentioning it, but as neither of us liked it...I don't suppose it matters.)
Anyway, at the time I didn't/don't have a pre-amp that could accommodate a dynamic mic (levels in the mud w/o phantom power), so I moved to this mic...and here I am. I can only assume the RE-20 would give me similar issues with my current pre, no?
I'd like to stay under $1000..but it is the season of tax deductions, after all.
Thanks.
Haneen

I had a SM7B also, that's why I remembered. The RE-20 sounds much better, clearer and warmer for VO than the Shure to my ears.
I don't have any trouble with gain with the several pres I own.
One condenser to look at is the KEL HM2D. It sounds very good.
I'm thinking it will work nicely on female voices. It's about $130.
Try KEL audio dot com. Some guy posted samples versus his
Sennehiser 416 ($1100) and it sounded smoother and just as good. Not harsh at all. Good luck.

Bill,
I think it was the KEL v. a Neumann--anyway, I ordered the KEL. It's $149 including shipping & with a 21-day guarantee. At that price, I may as well try it first.
Thanks,
Haneen

Not at all, Haneen! As a matter of fact I actually just did a post regarding the Alesis MultiMix with a note about you
As I recall, the Alesis' weak pre's was the reason you couldn't use the Shure, right?

Yes, you're right, Jacob. Nice to see you're up in the middle of the night to chat...
I still have the Alesis--I use it to make a phone patch out of skype. But even before I'd used the Shure, I found it added a low-volume high-pitched hum in the signal. I don't want to diss Alesis though--they have excellent customer support--which is worth it's weight in gold these days. Perhaps the FireWire board is clean; the one I have is USB.
By the way, the KEL mic is on back order. Apparently, they've had a run on them lately. I guess the word is out!
