I didn't even attempt to emulate McCullough. I'm beginning to learn from leads I'm getting from elsewhere that a client will all too often say they want a "Morgan Freeman" or "James Earl Jones" sound alike and that's not what they (or the script!) wants at all. They don't really know what they want until they hear it and then say "AHA!!!! That's it!! That's the voice!!"
So I pretty much ALWAYS just go with my own interpretation. The jobs I've won here have often been ones where I thought my audition sucked because I didn't come close to what I thought they were asking for. So anyway, here's mine....

Dang! I don't think SmartCast ever even sent me that lead. Funny thing is, New Horizons used to be one of my clients.

Colin...Bravo on the second take, a wonderful read, confident and flowing. Lee, thank you you are being very charitable and your comments are appreciated but I think your read comes right on the money to David McCullough's style...I thought yours was a very good narrative with the right pacing...David's as well.
Don't know about everyone else but it seems the trend lately is for clients wanting you to sound like someone else whether it be James Earl Jones, David McCullough, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley or Bart Simpson uhh Nancy Cartwright. It seems to me that a lot of work leans toward impersonations rather than what you yourself might bring to the project which is disheartening...I don't do impersonations but when I grow up I do want to be like this guy...Jim Dale...could listen to his reads all day...what a great talent!

Robert, Maybe the lesson here is that not every script, not every lead is something that everyone should attempt..."Jon maybe this script was outside of what you are naturally capable of...go stand in the corner over there" is a better pill to swallow than "cartoony"--but I appreciate your candor and honest opinion even though it is bathed in sarcasm with a hint of Moosehead-Thanks
|
I absolutely meant no sarcasm, Jon. Nor did I mean anything insulting with the 'cartoony' comment. I have nothing but admiration and respect for what I would consider the cartoony reads of Rajiv and Joe J and others.
Rather, I meant it as a concise summary of voicing way outside your natural delivery, either by altering pitch, dialect, inflection, or all three.
I absolutely agree that we're here to stretch our styles and have a spot of fun. I also strive to be positive in my criticisms.
I have nothing but respect and admiration and cyber-affection for 99.7% of our peers here.
And - since I hate to bleat and run - I'll put up my humble offering on Mr. Keys. I consider it, too, borderline cartoony, and certainly too flat-line for my liking. Just trying to follow some fairly contradictory direction....
Voice On!

You know guys, listening to your audition reads to the gigs that come through this site alone is worth the price of subscription.
I get many of these auditions and I always refer to these reads as "how it should could be done" an invaluable learning tool.
I wonder just how many noobs like me are taking advantage of this valuable resource.....
Lurking....soaking and learning...... with fangs and all......

Andy ~
LOVE the reference to “noobs, lurking, soaking, learning....” Great choice of words. Have you ever thought of being a writer?
Yes, I agree. Listening to Colin and Sid and Erik and Ed and September and David and everyone's wonderful demos and auditions, IS worth $300.00 a year! Or more! We basically have here:
A master mind group.
A therapist.
A best friend.
A coach.
A mentor.
A confidante.
A business advisor.
A parent.
An adversary.
A professor.
A motivational speaker.
A technological advisor.
A grammarian.
A copy editor.
A website designer.
A legal advisor.
A party animal that reminds us to lighten up….
Shall I go on.....?
This forum is worth its weight in gold. I learn something valuable every single day I log onto this forum. I love it! And I am so grateful for all the experts and open minded people that post here....as well as the lurking noobs that occasionally speak up and impart THEIR wisdom as well.
Always love to read your interesting posts Andy.

No harm no foul Robert, we're all big kids here, the fact you take any time at all to listen to any of us is a great thing and hope you will never stop.

Robert. You have such a soothing voice. It is a voice I would want to go to sleep with. YOU CAN'T SLEEP WHEN WAR IS GOING ON! I hardly got any sleep when I was in basic training for the Army. You must imagine yourself being there or imagine yourself in Iraq with hand granades blowing up all around you. War is horrible, but if nothing else it is exciting. NOW FIND SOME MOTIVATION TO CREATE EXCITEMENT IN YOUR READ, OR DROP AND GIVE ME 50 PUSH UPS, SOLDIER. Lol. Just kidding.
