Hi. I've been lurking for a while. This is my first forum post.
I've been trying to get into the business for a while, but don't have funds for a professional recording studio or classes nor a premium membership here. Still, I hope to some day "make it".
I've been told for more than 15 years now by a wide variety of people that I need to do something "professional" with my voice. I've been hired for a couple of office jobs solely because they wanted me on their phones. (Yes, I was told this point blank) but because my skills, other than my voice, fall into the realm of "secretarial", I'm not a big money-maker.
Still, I do what I can to get my voice "out there". I DJ on the internet, I've recorded so many voicemail and "on hold" messages I can't count them all any more. I was working with a company that was making a computer game and was the lead voice actress. Unfortunately, the project got tabled, so, no voice work for me there.
So, like tens of thousands of artists, I'm waiting for my "break" and trying to make it happen. Being able to bid on jobs here would be a fabulous opportunity, but... it's not in the cards (or my wallet) right now.
Reading the forums has been a super way to learn new things, though. So I am grateful for that!

Hi Laura - welcome!

There's a lot of good people here who are willing to help out. It's a very supportive community of VA's...

Your voice has a very nice timber to it (and your last name is fantastic!)

My advice would be to find some good VO classes, and practice, practice, practice. One of my teachers suggested reading ad copy from magazines, or lines from movie scripts. When you're ready, you can get a pro demo done to show off your range.

I find auditioning on Voice123 to be a great rehearsal vehicle. I know the price can seem steep at first, but it's possible to make it back on a single job.

In any case, I hope to hear more from you in the future, and maybe even work on some projects together.

Take care, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours,
Joe J Thomas

Laura:
Welcome to the bizarre bazaar!
Caught a hear of your intro and agree with those around you that you have the pipes...
Now comes the hard part, 'cuz so do a couple of other thousand scrabblers out there.
I suggest you beg, borrow and steal enough $$$ to invest in a humble home-set-up. Check out the Tech forum here for the easiest route.
Then put a few little nuggets on your site. Since you have the background and chops for it, I'd recommend a couple of nice telephony clips.
Then send them those demos in for each and every of the many phone postings here.
Sooner or later, you will get a gig. Then another.
But you simply cannot sit and wait for something good to happen with that little intro snippet.
Make it happen; and it might.
I'm pulling for you. Welcome to the club.

Welcome Laura.

I’m sure you’ll find these forums full of talents willing to share their knowledge and experience with you. I agree with Robert and Joe, on the pipes, and if being a VO talent is your dream, you might as well make it happen.

Cheers.
