Okay... after seeing 4 or 5 of these auditions posted today I've gotta ask: Have any of you ever done, received comment back, been hired and/or been paid for one of those Pattaya, Thailand spots?

Dave,
I have - for a long time now - IMMEDIATELY deleted any and all Pattaya leads. They may be perfectly legit, and I've done a few spots for Asian and middle Eastern companies, but I have a bad feeling about those Pattaya leads.

Oh drat. It's just another post from Colin and...
Wait a minute! There's some damn good production going on here!
lol
Seriously, Colin, that sounded really great. That's the kind of production I enjoy doing, too. I'm not a hip-hop, in-yer-face, cutting-edge, radio-imaging kind of producer. I prefer the more subtle emotional stuff like that. Very nice!

RE: the Thailand leads... uh, the budget is fixed at $50, and he was quite clear in one of the leads that he never re-uses talent.
It's a no go for me.

Yeah, I've been Pattaya'd to death too. I keep recalling the commercial parody that SNL did on the Las Vegas Commercials, "What happens in Thailand stays in Thailand".....or was it Bangkok? Funny bit either way.. and they never re-use talents? Sure, who would rob the same bank twice?
Here are a couple of recent auditions. I decided to give the costal a try. Perhaps a little more subdued than Colin's, instructions said they were looking for more of an actor than a voice, not that I'm an actor. No rating yet.
And another, commercial for ticketpages.com. Instructions weren't too specific. I gave them a streetwise presentation and a more enthusiastic one as well. No rating yet.

I just now saw that Beach lead and submitted. They almost immediately opened it and rated it, which was nice. I was very happy to get a 5 on this one, since I'm really wanting to do more documentaries. Sadly though, I've learned that 5's do not necessarily a job make.
Colin, I really liked your read and mix on that. David, you sounded awfully dragged down on yours, though, IMO.

Scott:
I was going for 'dragged down', 'depressed', 'sympathetic to the issue'. It seemed to me that was what they wanted, more emotive than narrative, to convey the feeling of a depressing subject. I had another version which had less emotion and more 'voice' (if that makes sense) but I discarded it. I got a 2 and I'd really like to hear what sounded to them like a 5. Would you mind posting yours?

WoW Colin...what a pro! That was truly captivating....
Scott you are as warm, real and natural as ever....
David, I'm sorry I agree with Scott on the 'dragged down' sound. If you saved the other 'more voice' one you did I'd like to hear it...you have a great voice!...

Marilyn:
Thanks, I appreciate your comment. I keep only what I submit, maybe one or two versions of something. But that's after discarding what I think might not work for the seeker. The Voicier(?) version was good in my opinion, but I was thinking they probably had enough of that type of delivery already and I tried for something else. It was just too far off the mark. That's the trouble with this kind of auditioning. You can't ask questions, and you get no substantive feedback from the seeker.

If you get the gig, don't tell Connie. Under $500 for a 24 minute piece seems like pretty short money.

It is low, but some things you do for the love of it. And I doubt I'll get it since my rating just dropped to a 4, meaning they probably found at least one, probably more, they like better. Easy come, easy go.

I agree. Based on the "value" of the message in this piece, I also would probably have submitted an audition if I'd been awake when the SmartCast lead for it arrived in my mailbox. But by the time I opened it, their quota had been filled.
I would normally quote $650 for a job this size so a bid of $499 might not have been what they had in mind for "under $500." But there are some projects that, for whatever reason, you feel you want to be associated with, regardless of the money. And this looks like it could be one of those.
It's a moot point, really, because I don't think whatever I would have submitted would be chosen over your read. I liked Colin's read, too, but I think his was a bit more ominous than yours.
(As a totally irrelevant aside, this post marks the 1000th time I have flung open my cake hole to regale this forum with one of my pearls of wisdom -- or stupidity. )
