Hello again:
Anyone familiar with Mike Kirby's Voiceworx?
Has anyone used the workbook and CD? if so, what was your experience?
Sorry to flood the room...just trying to get information!
Regards,
John Biggs |

Hi John. Thought I'd answer this. I've heard Mike Kirby all over the place and I'm fairly local (about 45 minutes north on the highway, really) to Toronto where he's based (or where VoiceWorx is based, anyway. I'm not sure where he actually lives these days. ).
When I was doing my initial research to start things off for me, I found his site and really liked what I saw. I purchased the workbook and went through the CD. I found it very handy for finding possible scripts for my commercial and narration demos. It was encouraging and filled with useful information. I even considered getting my professional demo produced there.
In the end, I decided to go elsewhere (I should have my new commercial and narration demos in about 6 weeks at this point). I would say that for the small amount you would spend on the workbook and CD, it's worth getting.
I'd also highly recommend Making Money In voice-overs by Terri Apple (which also comes with a CD), and of course, James R. Alburger's The Art Of Voice Acting.
If you want to learn more about *acting* methods, however (and as someone who comes from a music background rather than an acting background, that's *always* something I can use!), I highly recommend picking up a copy of Michael Shurtleff's Audition. It'll help you with script interpretation - especially when you have very little time in which to do it.
Good luck!
All the best,

Jodi,
Six weeks?? Why so long?
Sgt.Pepper was recorded in less time!
Just curious.....
P.S. Mike Kirby lives in Toronto.

Hi David. Cool to hear that Mike's still living here after all the success he's had. But as I'm starting to discover, it's quite possible to live anywhere you'd like and still be very successful in this business - though it's surely *easier* to live closer to one of the major city centres for voice-over.
As for why it takes so long, I think because there are other demos to mix in the queue. I'm honestly ok with waiting though. Especially considering that I got two demos done for the price of one. I'll see how the final mix sounds and I'll know then if the wait was worth it. I figure it'll be at least better than what I have now.
And if it's awesome? I'll be pleasantly surprised.
All the best,
