Hi there,
Greetings from down-under...I am so new to this internet based voice-over biz. ..So much still to learn about setting up a home studio. I am wondering with my 'OZ' accent if there is the possibility of gaining work through this site....but first, I would appreciate any comments on my demo...
Thanks ahead,
Deborah

Hi Deborah..
Man, I love your vocal quality and impeccable diction
Here are some of my thoughts..
1) if this demo is being submitted for agency representation I think it's way too long..maybe take out the most of the character and the narration technical type spot and insert in a separate demo, tighten up the reads a bit and the editing ...
2)I detected some mouth clicky stuff in a number of spots
3) most of the character spots didn't work for me
4) the sexy spot at the end seemed a little forced to me
5) the spots that worked best for me where the first spot, the second spot (maybe tighten the read) and the germs spots...the tarot spot would have worked if you would have tapped into the very cool darker, mysterious part of your vocal quality..

I know it may just be the accent, but you actually sound like Toni Collette to me -- the tone, the oh-so-slight nasality on the playful reads. (Collette is one of my favorite actresses -- she's amazing)
So I think you could be marketable to US casting on that basis alone. That being said, I don't think it matters that much where you're from -- more important is what you can do.
I agree with most of what Lee says -- except...I actually like your more character-y reads better than the straight stuff. And I really thought the "sexy" read at the end was funny...I heard your tongue waaaay up in your cheek, so to speak. Made me smile.
You do have some clicking or smacking -- I have trouble with that, too. I use a glycerine based mouth spray (Entertainer's Secret) to help mitigate that. Not a miracle cure, but it helps some.
Just my opinion. But I'd love to hear you in the states!

To my ears, the straight reads sounded more believable and real.
I wasn't totally convinced the characters were living breathing people. They sounded more like caricatures to me.

Thank you so much for your feedback….
I had a listen to your demos as well…both of them just fabulous…I appreciate so much your kind words and positive advice....though not sure which voices to delete now.. ha ha
In regard to the character voices Lee, I must say, you are right …I am not as confident with them as the straight reads…and I know what you mean about them sounding somewhat like 'caricatures’ ..There is most definitely room for improvement, I know.
….And yes Melba, you are also so right ….I absolutely had my tongue in my cheek, yes ‘cheeky’ in the ‘sexy/naked' read…lol…and thank you for the great compliment on sounding a little like Toni Collette…Did you ever see her in the very funny Aussie movie in her early days as an actress….'Muriel’s Wedding'…It is a scream…mind you Aussie humor is verrrry tongue in cheek as well..
Cheers,
Deborah[/quote][/b]

Muriel's Wedding is one of my favorite movies of all time! She's so delightfully geeky...yet sad...yet lovable. I also liked her in Clockwatchers. An American film. Ever see it?
Regarding characters vs. caricatures....there's a place for both, even in commercial and industrial work. Broad is sometimes the approach called for -- sometimes it's subtle and real. Be good at both.

I would completely agree with your character vs caricatures statement, however, I'm finding that the tendency of caricature portrayals is that they tend to border on the cliche, since they're not grounded in any reality.
Muriel's Wedding was Toni Collette's breakout film, unbelievable.....I love Clockwatchers..what a cast...Lisa Kudrow, Parker Posey and Toni Collette...who can forget Toni in Sixth Sense, an Academy Award Nomination

Right, you can tell you are a little out of your comfort zone..It sounds to me like you are doing "a voice" rather than a living breathing character.
When I'm trying to nail a character, sometimes I have a family member or a friend be my sounding board and I deliver the spot to them for practice, in order to get the feel of a one on one connection...
It's a minor tweak though, you've got it goin' on!!
