...I'd like to get some feedback on this from the pro VOs out there, especially from those of you who are also live performers.

I call this a "multi-vocal interpretation" of the classic poem Casey At The Bat in which I perform about 30 character voices and impressions. I've actually been performing this piece since high school, although it wasn't until I worked it up for a talent show in college that it became the character voice extravaganza that I've been performing ever since.

I just uploaded it onto YouTube today--it was previously hosted on a site of a music group I used to tour with:

I will say in advance that I don't believe this is the best example of my work... especially since it was recorded after a 30-hour road trip and three concerts so I was exhausted. But I'd been performing this piece during concerts regularly and audiences kept asking for a copy of it. So the group's manager talked me into taping it in the studio so he could upload it to the group website.

So while I'm well aware that some of the impressions aren't "spot-on", I'm still proud of this clip in that it was recorded in a single take, with no edits or redubs. (It's pretty much the way I perform it live too.) It's also landed me a number of live gigs, including one I just booked as a Frank Sinatra-style crooner for a dinner theater comedy show.

At any rate, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on it.

Craig, I absolutely loved this, very enjoyable.

It's great to see how you completely change your face and body language with each character...and that comes through when listening without looking at the video too.

Great stuff, and btw it was really good meeting up with you a few weeks back and I'm sorry that I was unable to hang around and spend more time with y'all. PM me!

I gotta tell ya... I checked out your V123 site (and the Youtube link) and was blown away with your Casey At The Bat... amazing.

Hope you don't mind, but I thought others would enjoy it as well: [snip]
Coming from a pro VO guy, that may very well be the highest compliment I've ever received. I'm honored.

If you click on the "demo" on my V123 page there's also a live recording of "Casey" that one of the groups I used to tour with actually included as a bonus track on one of their albums.

I only uploaded it there because my actual VO demos won't be done until late April or June and I at least wanted to have something available to download there. It's well beyond the 60-second prerequisite for demos here.

wonderful job on "Casey at the Bat"
Some very unusual impressions there along with some usual ones... but from Don Knotts to Jim Neighbors and Bill Clinton and Walter Brennan and the rest -- right on the money.
Thanks! I can be really critical of my stuff, so hearing a compliment like that gives my ego a nice little boost.

Some of them aren't actually impressions--just character voices I do. I also tell audiences that if they don't recognize the impressions, then it's an "original character voice" I came up with. Smile

But I was mostly performing that piece for church audiences back when that was recorded. And since the audiences were all ages, I would do a wide variety of characters from classic TV and film to contemporary stuff, just to do something for everyone.

I also will occasionally take requests for characters or impressions, and then randomly insert them into the performance. It tends to be risky doing that though, because I have the poem and characters memorized in a specific sequence. But even if I flub on a voice or two, audiences don't seem to care.

Incidentally, if anyone reading this is registered with youtube and you want to rate my video or leave comments, they're more than welcome from any members here. In fact, I would be honored to have any members here rating/commenting on my video there.
