Steve, that was bloody great! Thanks for that. Not off-topic at all! I thought it would just slow it WAY down, I didn't realize it would add that stutter effect as well.

I've poked around my Sound Forge but the "Time Stretch" feature in processes doesn't work, so I'm guessing I don't have the latest version. I went through the help section but the things they recommend don't work either. So, as their customer support is only open Monday - Friday, I'm going to have to wait until Monday to find out more. Sigh. Thanks so much for the info though, I'm looking forward to fiddling around with it!

Actually, I find my cool chairs at little second hand stores. I picked up a cool early 60's chair for $20 a few weeks ago.

A couple of other thoughts on cramming a lot of copy into a short time. First of all, having the client there to decide when it is too fast is best. Take the onus off you and the engineer to try to make this decision.

I do some fairly hard sell spots self-directed every month for a furniture place and I always think that I'm never going to be able to get the words in, but somehow after getting my head and mouth warmed up, I manage to make it work in 28.5.

1. The meat of most spots is actually in the middle - Set up, Body, Resolve. Not universally true of course, but the point is to find the copy points and be sure to allocated enough time for them. But the main point about speeding up in certain spots to allow a few more seconds in other spots.

2. My pal Frank Frederick suggests getting closer to the mic and lowering your volumn a bit. Don't over project - just let it flow out without force.

Yes, I was rather surprised that the client left before we even started recording the spot. That was a first in my entire voice-over career. The owner of the business wrote the copy, (not an ad agency), so even though it's an incredibly successful business, I'm not sure the ad was written with "ad copywriting techniques" in mind.

I do agree that warming up helps! As the takes progressed, I was able to get it more and more within the time constraints. And I love the idea of set-up, body, resolve. (Frank IS amazing.)

That's one of my favorite books! I have one of Elaine's videos as well and not only is she very talented, she seems like she's a fun and interesting person as well. I hope I get to meet her someday.

I also just wanted to say that I really enjoyed and benefited from your presentation at Voice2007 last year. Your ideas and information on self-direction were incredibly valuable! That's been one of my biggest challenges so I appreciate that you addressed that at the conference. I'm looking forward to seeing you this year in L.A.
