Diane
thank the goddess Ry Cooder brought Buena Vista Social Club to the world !!
anyway ... allow me to twist this jazz path of ours into Joe's Garage for a moment..
Ever the brilliant dadaist and composer, Frank's Mothers produced some fine jazz fusion big band-esque LPs back in the day, the best (imo) being The Grand Wazoo..
Chris M .. picked up Ellington Live at Newport.. great !!!
thanks for the heads up ..
and now, the crux of the biscut
"jazz isn't dead, it just smells funny" (Zappa) _________________ "the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best."

Man, John -- Zappa! I haven't thought about him in a long while. That takes me back -- wow! College days ... college plays ... college parties... hmmm....what?
Oh, yeah -- the Mothers of Invention. That's really bending the direction.
And yes, bless dear Mr. Cooder. I gotta put up another one:

heh .. w/ few auditions comin thru the pike, and my sweetie gettin her hockey fix for the nite, i'm indulging my passion for tunes.. thanks, Diane, for startin the thread and all of the great contributors..
a couple years back i was scanning the racks of world music CDs at a fave shop and came across a diamond of a find...
what caught my eye was the line up of jazz legends backing up this amazing afropop singer from Ethiopia: Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Pharoah Sanders. oh, and David Gilmore of Pink Floyd..
Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw ..

Gorgeous music from a gorgeous lady -- thanks for posting that. There's this really wonderful Ethiopian restaurant in Montclair, NJ that plays great music like this. Love the food too -- no utensils, just that spongey bread, and you scoop up the food with it. So much fun.
I always loved Paul Simon's work with Ladysmith Black Mambazo. (And that film THE VISITOR I recommended in the movie thread had some fabulous African drum street music in it, too.)
This is from the Graceland concert tour in Zimbabwe:

a Jazz, Big Band and Swing collection wouldn't be complete without some classic Western Swing by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys..
I love western swing, Bob Wills, Cowboy Copas, or Asleep at the Wheel... Betcha theres a whole slew of young hep cats out there that would really like it but may be turned off because its called "Western Swing".. So, to attract a new audience i suggest a name change.. something more modern and in with the times..
Here Is Bob Wills, The King of Hick Hop:

As long as we're plugging jazz festivals, let me put in a word for the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz. It's July 18-19-20 in Bushnell Park in downtown Hartford and it's FREE!
I expect to be voicing the radio and TV spots to promote the festival. That will also be free. _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com

nothing made me happier today than to see the little copyright tiff over Chet Baker vids' on YouTube has been resolved. now the Prince of Cool can be enjoyed thousands of times a day, and perhaps by thousands of folks who haven't heard him before...
there are two songs that get me weepy: Somewhere Over The Rainbow by almost any artist; and My Funny Valentine, but only when done by Chet Baker:
its cool, daddy-o _________________ "the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best."

Good about Chet Baker, John. Thanks for posting that. I love his Funny Valentine, too.
And Lena Horne is 91!!!? Wow. Beautiful woman with a voice to match.
And I'm very excited -- we're heading up to Montreal this week - JAZZ FEST going on!! Very cool... hope to discover some new faves up there. _________________ Diane

One of my former co-workers is celebrating his anniversary tomorrow, so he and his wife are marking the occasion by going to Iridium in NYC tonight to see Les Paul, who was already 46 when my friend got married 47 years ago. _________________ For more voice over demos, my life story, and other foolishness, please visit my website at www.leegordonproductions.com
