...I just completed transcribing all the episodes I have of "The Sound of War." Written, produced and directed by Bud Greenspan (whoever he is) and voiced by David Perry (whoever that is.)

Best I can tell these were broadcast in the early 60's but I can't be sure.... It is dubbed... "the actual sound record of World War II."

I will say that there are many rare sound clips in this set.

Colin:
Damn.. now I am going to spend a lot of time listening to this...
fascinating stuff...way too much music mixed in -- the material is dramatic enough -- but things were different back then.
I have in my own archives a series on 78 rpm 12 inch records called "I can hear it now" which has a similar style and was produced by CBS news narrated by Edward R. Murrow and was produced by Fred Friendly.
That dates back to the late 40s or at the latest, the very early 50s.
The one I have features the hydrogen bomb tests, the Alger Hiss, Whitakaer Chambers affair, Babe Ruth saying good bye, etc after the war.

Imagine making radio documentaries like that now, with modern production techniques and styles.
It's all in the hands of the narrator to make it sing...more work for the likes of us!

This fella David Perry has a style like one of my favs, Peter Thomas.
Why did you do this?

I like history.

I'm familliar with the Fred Freindly stuff but I don't have any. Didn't Cronkite do that show later?

These "Sound of War" programs are not produced very well but there is some real obscure audio clips on some of them.

And.... of course Churchill's speeches are like music.

You are probably familair with Steve Sabol, the guy who produces NFL Films. Bud Greenspan is sort of the Steve Sabol of the Olympics. He's the guy who has made the "official" Olympic films for the better part of the last half century. He is almost always seen with glasses, but propped up on his forehead rather than in the normal position.
