Chris,
So the MicroTrack II doesn't use disposable alkaline batteries? What a boneheaded move. I understand and appreciate promoting rechargeble battiries. But that does you no good when your battery dies in the field without having something you can use in a pinch. Thanks for the warning. I was actually considering picking up one because musicians seem to glow about them on message boards. It was the nearly dead Compact Flash and MicroDrive storage format that gave me pause. It's getting harder and harder to find those cards and drives in stores and online. But I can go down to my neighborhood Walgreens and find an SD card.

I'm beginning to think the dream DAW would consist of a CF recorder (no fan/HD noise) and a MacBook running Audacity (yes Jacob, there I go again with the CF recorder). |
Chris, I couldn't agree with you more (except about the MacBook)!
I'm currently using a Fostex MR-8 MkII CF recorder in my studio and I'm pretty happy with it!
I chose the MR8 because it was inexpensive, and because it meant I didn't have to worry about all of the compatability/sound card/noise problems that seem to plague many.
Only 2 qualms:
1-It datestamps every file as being recorded on 16th August 2006. I think I had a good day that day, but I really don't want to relive it every time I record a script!
2-It's a minor hassle having to move it from my booth to my computer every time I record something. No big deal, though.
Cheers!
Steve

The MR-8 MkII looks like a fancy unit for such a low price. Too bad its top sampling rate is 44.1 kHz (more than adequate for voice, though).
Trey - yup, you can't go to the local Kwik-E-Mart and pick up replacement batteries for the Microtrack II. Truly boneheaded.

Hey Guys
I have a bid in to do location sound for a movie in late June. If I get the green light this is what I'm thinking on 702T. Info here http://www.sounddevices.com/products/702t.htm. Its a bargain at around 2,000 USD
What I really want is the one below. I might break the bank to get the 788T. This one is around 5,500 USD. At that price it is not much more than my first DAT.
