Actually, Lee...YES that's the one!
A whopping "2". But I like yours much better than mine.(attached)

Lee, JC:
Y'know, I always say Where there's a Will, there's Relatives
I though both of you did equally well considering the substandard copy you were given. It's all about how well this company does business rather than what is they actually do. (Doesn't tell me anything) Also, using the same word or form of the word 'expect' three times within 5 seconds? Not one crumb of originality in it. Sounds like bits of a dozen other meaningless, feel good spots, all in one lump. And they have the nerve to rate you so low. If you were rated a 2, then their copy is worth a Minus 2!
Erik:
How excited is too excited? How intense is too intense? I remember auditioning for a thing called Party Heat on V123 back in January. (Cops on boats patrolling partyers on boats) They asked for a rough, tough cowboy voice and when the show aired, they featured something else entirely. I don't know how extensive your background is with that sort of audition, but it's probably much greater than mine. Personally speaking, the next time I audition for something like that, I'm going to give them what I think is best and let them decide.

Who knows? They don't alway say, or know themselves. I try to always give a few brief reads with the first being what I think may be the closest to what they want. I have been chosen before on my B or C reads which is odd since I assumed most seekers wouldn't get that far if they did not like the first. It's a crap shoot.
Oftentimes I will just pull out a delivery that has sold in the past and try it out on them if I think it may fit. I have about 5 or 6 standby deliveries that have been good to me and I tend to fall back on them if there is not a whole lot of direction to the contrary. I am not advocating this as a way to audition but sometimes you just feel comfortable with what you know has pleased in the past. Obviously, it doesn't always work. Perhaps for this one I should have spread my wings a bit and gone for something fairly new.
There is always tomorrow.
Or today, for that matter. See ya!

I managed to eek out a "4" on the "two minute video presentation" lead... keep in mind they were looking for Kevin Spacey -- so they were not looking for a big voice.
also toss in my western vignette read, just done.

Erik -- Definitly not a 2. I think what often happens is a seeker hears a particular sound in his head (one which he is generally not able to articulate in his request) and then, when the demos come back not conforming to the pre-existing image he had envisioned, he rates them poorly, reglardless of their quality.
David -- When I heard Erik's demo and saw the related info (didn't get the lead myself), it also reminded me of Party Heat, although, until you mentioned it, I had forgotten the name of that particular project. I think the producers of that show fall into the same category as the ones mentioned in the above paragraph.
As I recall, they posted that job at least two or three times each both here and on Voices. I never got the sense they could actually describe what they were looking for, if indeed they even knew what that was. Somehow I think they fell into the "we'll know it when we hear it" category. But again, to penalize a voice talent for not being that "it" when they themselves were unable to specify what "it" was, seems grossly unfair.
I didn't realize Party Heat had made it to the airwaves. Otherwise I would have kept an eye out for it.
Michael -- Yours is better than either JC's or mine, so I'm glad they gave you a decent grade. Now let's see if they give you the job. Since the average was 2.3, I don't imagine they handed out too many 5s, if any. I expect the only person who could get a 5 from them would be Kevin Spacey himself.

Eric,
I also received a "2" rating on the "Nowhere to Run" TV series lead -- and I was surprised because I thought I had done well.
I have done this sort of work before.
Guess they didn't like anything.
By the way, I recorded this on the road in New Mexico -- using an EV RE27ND mic, and an old Sony pro-walkman as a preamp -- Zoom flash wave recorder set to 24/48 with a laptop bearing the Goldwave editing suite.
Pillows used for sound proofing.

I was thinking of you Thom when I saw that lead come in. Very nice.
Sid Whatley would nail it too.
Nice read too Michael. The quality is pretty good too considering.

I'm going to go out on an unpopular limb here and say that I didn't particularly care for the audition by a man I have on a pedestal.... Thom.
Your cowboy voice was GREAT, just wonderful. But I got that lead, too, and honestly, Thom, I wondered why you muddied it all up with the dialogue. It became comedic and there's no way to know if that's what the client wanted since the script wasn't a dialogue.
I LOVE your cowboy voice and even though I submitted, I'd have no qualms at all about losing out to you or Sid (who, I simply can not believe, did NOT get that lead!). But I'm fearful that this is one time where the production may diminish an otherwise typically excellent delivery.

In Response to Caryn's demo...I thought you did a nice job with that one, Caryn. CERTAINLY worth more than a 3!! Especially with a private invite.
It's funny...I bitched earlier today about receiving a "2" and "3", and then proceeded to get 2 "5's" today! Here's my "5" for the "Queen-sized" script...

JC:
Bitch and ye shall receive.
Lee:
I happened to catch Party Heat on one of the cable channels (Spike?) while surfing and decided to watch just to see what it was really about. As advertised: cops in boats rounding up kids in boats with barely enough collective IQ to light a 20 watt bulb. I think the show aired twice.....maybe. They're runnin' out of ideas, man.

I've read several scripts for the company that does "Party Heat" including another show called "Graveyard Shift". They do great work. They asked me to read for Party Heat but I just wasn't right for it. Don't know who eventually got it but he's perfect for the show.
