PC vs. Mac - Thinking of Getting a Mac

Tom, I had no idea it's that seemless. The dual platform systems I've had in the past required rebooting to access the different OS. Anyway, since MacPro uses Intel (wow, that's weird!), I was hoping it'd be more like accessing a virtual drive or using RDP. This is going to be cool. Can't wait!

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear....you do have to boot into each particular OS....but if you boot into Mac, your windows partition shows up as a virtual drive. you can then access files from your windows partition while you are in Mac....you can't run windows programs or anything like that. You have to boot into windows to run programs. I hope that's clear. I'm sorry if I mislead you.

Don't sweat it, Tom. I'm no worse off since I've dual booted before. I also have another PC and laptops (all running Windows). If I can network the Mac with the PCs, I still have plenty of options for the transition that will still allow me to work quickly and effectively.

So far so good with the new MacPro. First the big surprise to me: it's whisper quiet - easily the quietest machine I've ever owned, and considering it has server specs (2 duo core), I was expecting major blowers on it. The fans are big but wider and the whole machine is tight (the metal case fitting very snugly) -- so air flow is very even which probably helps keep it quiet.

I've spent the last couple days just learning Mac OS X (roman numeral 10 not X - apparently it's a source of ridicule if you don't know that). So far I'm finding the system pretty intuitive, but downloading software or updates without having to virus check is very strange to me. I understand from prior research that there hasn't been a reported Mac virus in 15 years and that was only a joke or message popup, nothing destructive. Pretty cool if that's true.

Oh, and I love the Mac dashboard, but I understand Windows created one (or Yahoo did for Windows). Nice to have realtime references, clocks, weather, whatever, with one mouse click. Frankly, the only thing I'm finding hard to get used to is the standard keyboard; I have to get a Mac keyboard that's ergonomic, which is what I'm used to now.

Anyway, I'll probably write more about this transition to Mac OS on one of my web sites geared towards tech stuff. For now, I did want to tell Tom in particular that I found a great book, Switching to the Mac, Tiger Edition, which is full of great info.

Also, and more importantly, tonight I downloaded the beta version of VMWare for Mac, Fusion. My sister is the network admin at a large law firm and they use VMWare for the servers. It's a virtual machine software program like Microsoft's Virtual PC. Basically, it creates a virtual computer within your computer and allows you to run other OS's - without rebooting.

I'm going to install it tomorrow or Wednesday, then get new installations for Windows XP and Adobe Audition and see how it goes. Here's a link on VMWare if you want to learn more. http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/fusion/

The demo will thrill you, especially when you see the ability to drag and drop between the Mac and Windows (which is in a virtual window). Thank you for the link Nikki! I'll definitely check it out. I knew you'd love it once you had it. I agree with you...it is the quietest machine I've ever heard and that is without even doing anything to sound proof it. Glad you're loving it Nikki.

Ok, the one thing I don't get is why run Windows XP on your MAC....doesn't that defeat the purpose?

True about the quick installs but there is one more thing Apple forgot to add to the OS to reverse those quick installs in case you change your mind.

After you install an application preference files and files corresponding to the program are stored in more than one location.
