It's a type of file - like .mp3 or .wav. To see if you have it, when you go to save a file, it should be one of the options.

Audio Interchange File Format (or AIFF) is a file format for storing digital audio (waveform) data. Just to back up what Victor said. I think it was actually developed by Apple and they use it as the standard format for Macs. The most notable fact is that aiff files are not compressed and can be huge. Although there is a new AIFF format (AIFF-Compressed (AIFF-C or AIFC) that supports compression ratios as high as 6:1. ).

Like the guys said, it's a favorite for Mac users. It's fairly standard and your sound editing software may well have the option to save as an "aif" file. If you're using Adobe Audition, that option is definitely available to you.

Record a sample file, click File > Save as > and click the down arrow for the pull down menu next to "Save as type." Apple AIFF is listed at the top of course. You'll still be able to play back and edit the file even if you're on a PC.

Dirty Mac users! Just kidding. Any good software should be able to save audio to an .aiff file. I use Adobe Audition and it will create this type of file.

That is correct, even free software like iTunes has the capability of converting on to aiff from a variety of formats.

In short, .aiff is exactly like .wav, but better because it's mac.
