Hello Phyllis-

I have been reading about what you have been doing and was wondering if you might do so with me. I was wondering what kinds of demos you might need. There are some on my website at http://scottnilsen.voice123.com and I have other demos that are in my more natural voice.

Thank you for the opportunity to listen (and see!) to your voice! Yours is a voice that feels good to hear – it’s warm, resonate, deep yet with clear high notes. I see large, clear (yet not hard) spheres, moving around tightly like bubbles, moving freely most of the time, yet again, they are packed in very nicely. The “Nautilus Aerobics Plus” spot on your commercial demo is an example of this description. Your throat is open, yet, not loose. That’s not easy, and many announcers would tense up and constrict during such a read.

What’s interesting is that during the narration you do tense up but not at the beginning of your commercial demo when you introduce yourself – which is a similar read. However, a long narration is harder than a spot with energetic music under it and can be tough and stress producing. Can you feel your jaws tensing during the narration? Can you hear the difference between the narration demo and the commercial demo? I think if you can be open all the time everything will sing.

When I listened, I had not yet read all the way down on your V123 website, where I see you’ve had quite a bit of experience with public speaking. That’s fantastic, because you were trained to NOT rely on equipment to sound better, or hide behind it. With that as your structure, it’s no wonder you can produce those high-energy reads and still remain open and yet in control of your voice. Yee ha!

Thank you for asking. I also just had a chance to listen to your demo of the day. It wasn't as open as I know you can be - it sounds like you are chewing the words a bit. Think about how your voice feels when you do public speaking, and when you did the workout spot - that's what you want all the time. I know it's not easy - I'm struggling with my vocal issues too, and grateful that the person I consider my coach is so patient with me.
