What I can hear shows that you're polished, yet flexible and believable. Your voice is deep AND yet fluid and moves without restriction. It's easy to listen to. It's almost like a big fluffy quilt, on the clothesline, blowing freely in the wind. But yet liquid - it's hard to explain what I am seeing but suffice to say there are no walls, nothing impinging. In fact, sometimes it is so unrestricted that the sound flows out of your nose and teeth. It's sort of like the sea water that hits the rocks, and then some of it splashes through. Restricting that flow would make for a cleaner sound.

You can probably get rid of that "whooshing" effect (as the sound "leaks" out of your teeth and nose) by changing the position of your lips, using all the skin on your lips, and trying not to let your voice vibrate into your nose. Yikes, that sounded pretty weird, didn't it?

One thing to consider concerning your southern-styled voice: voice seekers from overseas sometimes ask for “unaccented” English. Having a little accent may not be a problem to them, so, just for exercise, try to develop another sound that is less regional than your natural voice. It couldn't hurt and will be fun and may also help with the need for a bit more restriction around your nose and teeth.

You may want to use some tricks with your face to soften your accent and see if you can still maintain your quality. Just for an exercise, try talking with your lips puckered just to get those muscles involved. It's harder to keep your accent if you do that. If you think that's nutty, here's a trick: French, for example, is a hard language for Americans to speak with the correct accent. So, pucker and try to say "A" (the letter A) and it will come out euu - which is a French sound. Point is, there are tricks to get us to do what we need to do, without having to force it or sound fake. And at some point, you won't need to do the tricks, you'll know how to produce that sound from practice.

Another exercise to alter your speaking muscles in your face is to raise your eyebrows and keep 'em raised. Stuff something like a paper towel (NOT tissue, or TP, it will not come out easily!) in your cheeks. Experiment with other things, too. Pretend you're imitating someone from NY or NJ and see what your face does. It's cross-training for your face muscles.

Watch something on TV where you don't know the actors and see if you can figure out what kind of accent they have by the way they use their face. Watch an all Spanish channel with the volume on mute and try to imagine that they are speaking English - see what I mean? You know without listening that they are not speaking English. Too funny. But it will help you to understand what you're doing with your face when you speak - and thus, alter the southern accent a little and still sound real and not like a forced “character." You don't want to loose your accent - just soften it for V123 auditions where you think appropriate.

Phyllis....I'm sorry if this is imposing....feel free to decline, but could you do a viewing of my voice too? I've created a file with three auditions I have already posted in the demo of the day thread. I'm not looking for a critique of the auditions....but a "viewing" of my voice like you did for Allen. Again feel free to decline....I won't be upset. If you do it, I am truly grateful. Here is the file.

Tom:
You do know about the private message thingy, right?
I mean, do you really want Phyllis to strip you down to your shimmering inner sap right here?
Send her a private message, Old Boy.
I really don't want to hear any more Blue-Black Quartz with a Gravelly Vein insights right here.
Though I think she's great on these postings, she does double as a private advisor.

Voice On!

hahahaha...Rob, I don't care if anyone sees it....everyones already heard me from all my file posts. If she rips me apart, no one is going to care except me. She can reply via PM if she wants to, but it's not necessary....I'm not asking for a critique of my performances...just a voice viewing like she did for Allen.

Tom, I'm swamped with tech writing work right now but I will get to your voice, which is lovely, by the way, probably by the weekend. Thank you for asking.

Of course, Phyllis: I hastily retract any smart-aleck comments that offend.
I meant it in an off-hand, humourous vein, accrediting you with powers to conjure and see things beyond that which the masses do.
It was meant as an innocent reference, not as an appraisial of your character or beliefs.
You are a great help to many, and I much enjoy your posts and insight. To my knowledge, you are a fine and solid human being.
I shall edit it immediately.

Phyllis....thank you so much....I really appreciate it. Please don't rush or go out of your way to do this. I just think it's a fascinating gift you have and am very curious as to what you see. I could talk to you for hours and hours on end about your gift and not feel like I've heard enough. Thanks again for agreeing to this. But please just do it at your leisure....I don't want you to be taxed or put out by this request.

Tom;

Someone (Scott P?) a few days ago said something about your “wood” bars. I laughed and laughed, because it’s true, they are thick, dark wood. Four big horizontal bars, stacked on top of each other. Fabulous sound. It’s tough to have a voice like yours because it wants to sit low in your….voice box. (George, thanks for such a laugh!) And probably for as long as you can remember, it’s been all about the deeeeeep voice. Guys get in the habit of tossing the sound down as low as possible. Unfortunately, it means we don’t get to hear the higher notes and yep, you guessed it, you are pressing down on those bars.

Right now it looks like your bars are bending up and down in a “U” shape, very slightly, when I listened to the demos you posted here. The bars are indeed being pressed down deep into that…voice box, and when you do vary your voice, it’s more like the ends bend up and down. To vary your voice in a way that you’ll be pleased with, you want the bars to separate, and stay straight, and move up and down.

As you have heard before, I’ve suggested that people employ a sort of bio-feedback. Take note of what your throat is doing when you’re talking in different situations. Your MP3 hello was almost natural – I strained to hear your natural speaking voice – there is so much range and color there! But you didn’t go all natural – I could tell you were trying but not quite there. If you would, please, post another MP3 Hello here, don’t use headphones and simply reply to my comments as naturally as possible. It doesn't have to be long, just "okay you're crazy" or "that's interesting what you said about such and such" and that's it. NO SECOND TAKES. Think “space between my bars” kind of thing. Just talk – one take – and post it please. Yee ha!

Phyllis.....ok...here it is....one take.....this is as natural as it gets.....I can't be any more natural than this....this is me. I don't use headphones when I record, so no headphones were used....no processing except I normalized to -6......

(Okay, I’m done laughing hysterically.) Tom, you done good. It’s a huge difference, because that’s your bars more natural place to be. I hope everyone will jump in and give their opinion of that clip. And having heard your natural voice, I’d say the more you can keep it higher, and not go down so low, the clearer and more separate your bars will be. When it starts to sound like a growl, that’s too far down. The part that was the easiest to listen to, (great for long-form), was toward the end of your clip, when you thanked me. Because you’d almost left off the “thank you” and didn’t want to stop without it, you “forgot yourself” and the bars came to their natural places (separated and not pushed down) and it came out superb! Just because you've been doing it like that for a long time doesn't mean it is the most natural place for the bars.

Oh, for fun, listen for my comments about your voice on a clip in the Don LaFontaine thread now in Geek Place.
