What are the pros on this board using? Mic and a PC interface, then VST/DXi effects in Cubase or other high end recording software, or Mic, then hardware processing (like a dbx rackmount) and little/no processing in software? What provides the most high quality vocal sound?

Scott,

I use Pro Tools LE 6.4 with the DIGI 001 interface (essentially a glorified sound card) with a Windows XP box, circa 2002, that I have pushed to its limit memory-wise. I've seen used Pro Tools setups like mine going for $150.

I use a couple of plug ins for basic VO work -- and these are when things can get expensive. But Digidesign gives away a very good compressor that used to cost a ton (Bombfactory), and you can find some good cheap reverbs.

For a mic, I use a RODE NT-2 (used $200) large diaphragm condenser with a $19.99 pop screen. A lot of pros actually prefer the RODE mics to the really high-end stuff.

Just my three cents -- good luck.

I keep it sweet, simple and clean.

Sennheiser MKH-416>Avalon M5>Urei LA4 is the chain. Audio interface is a Firebox. Cubase for recording as well as Cool Edit Pro (I know, but if it ain't broke why fix it). About the only plug I use is Source Connect for ISDN sessions.
