| Do you want to know what mic we USE - or what mic we'd LIKE to use? |

| I answered as what I do use, although I wondered the same thing. |

Exactly. How many of us would like to be on a Neumann, but are currently speaking into a Tandy through a pair of pantyhose?
(I voted AKG. I chose it because I like the little hearts in their logo.) |

| I'd be curious to know what all these 'other' brands are that currently have the lead. |

Exactly, what are the "others?" I voted what I use and when I bought it, it seemed like what I wanted to use as well but I haven't had the opportunity to try many others. Coming from radio my choices were basically an EV RE-20 or a Shure KSM32. Those were the only two mics I had to compare at the time and I chose the condenser (Shure KSM32) at $500 and it felt like a cadillac. I'm still pretty happy with it. It is probably my most prized material possesion. _________________ www.ColinCampbellVoice.com

| Like I said in the other mic thread, having worked on many many mics I bought a U87 as I found that this is mic best suited for my voice (available today). Which doesn't mean it's the best for every voice under the sun - or under the rain in my case, living in UK. |

Well my other is a Blue Snowball.
And while I would like a new 5k mic, I will always speak through panty hose. As a matter of fact I have started speaking through them around the house to my wife and kids. _________________ 865-686-8925

For inexpensive microphones i prefer the Heil PR 40 microphone over the venerable EV RE-20 or newer 24. The Heil requires less driving and has a better price point. Other than that, it has been tested heads up and posts very similar numbers to the RE 20.
I think that anyone contemplating a phantom powered microphone and has the money should consider the Neumann U87 it is a standard everywhere and should you need to match tracks in the future or go to a studio somewhere else, there is a good liklihood that there will be a U87 within earshot.
My favorite mic at the $1,500 - $1,800 price point is the Telefunken AK47. It is a tube microphone, multi position and has proven to be a great sounding microphone for most men and women. It has little proximity effect and a very smooth mid and nice rounded top. It is not boomy or bassy and doesn't play well for the "Voice of God" reads, which might fair better with a Heil or RE 20.
Lastly, if it's a choice between spending the money on the microphone or the mic pre, I say spend it onthe mic pre. A Rhode or GT microphone with a decent mic pre will almost always sound better than a higher end Sennheiser, Neumann or AKG microphone that has been paired with a cheaper microphone. For those of you who live near a Sweetwater, Guitar Center or other good retailer, there is nothing like going out and auditioning mics and mic-pre's.
Lastly, while I know that ribbon mics are enjoying a renaisance, I would not recommend them to most oft he talent here.
I hope this has been helpful |

So I'm a couple/4 months late to the game....
I voted 'other' cause I use a BLUE Mouse. Great mic that I finally got dialed in to where I like what I'm hearing.
Just bought a BLUE Baby Bottle and can't wait to get that thing crankin' |
