Cira,

I agree with everything you said about Colin. It is a good thing he picked up quite a few things during all of his years in the business. Good for all of us.

He does great work!

Here's a demo I did for someone recently. I don't know how they found me but it must have been related to this forum. A newbie for sure but with a British or Austrailian accent and potential. OK, OK, it's just shameless self-promotion to get my DEMO PRODUCITON thread back up to the top of SELLING AND BUYING and to show off my production again (particularly on the 70's music piece,) but what's the harm after all.

Demos have really slowed down. If anyone wants one, it's a good time to ask.

Colin as usual nice job, really nice. She has a good set of chops as well.

Let me ask you something on the technical side though. People talk of having your demo "mastered." Do you do that or do you send that off? Just wondering.

Getting my son in K.C. to put me together a new puter. When that is done I will get on my Industrial stuff and ship that off to you.

Thanks for all your help.

Craig Wink

P.S.: Anyone thinking of getting a demo track put together, this is the guy bar none!

Hmmmmm.... "having your demo mastered." Don't know what they mean by that exactly but if I had to guess, it is a marketing term. I suppose what I do is "mastering."

If you need a few good words to get production going, Colin, I've got nothing but.
Here's what the Old Perfesser did for an alternate demo on my behalf. I don't even do characters, but he made it sound as if I do....

"Mastering" is a word that is often misused in the biz. When most people refer to mastering, they actually mean premastering.

MASTERING means the physical act of burning a glass master CD. Not burning a CD-R, but actually sending your audio to a mastering house to make a silver-back CD, like a commercial CD that you buy. This is referred to as CD REPLICATION. Burning copies of a CD-R is referred to as CD DUPLICATION.

PRE-MASTERING takes place after each track to go on a CD has been mixed and edited. This is done so the separate tracks on a CD (whether it be an album or a VO demo) sound like they belong together. You don't want your Commercial track and your Animation track and your Promo track to all be at different levels. So premastering is the process of fine-tuning the sound of material on a CD through equalization and compression.

Thanks for that Maya.

For those who do not know Very Happy Maya, she is a wonderful and helpful person and what I really like about her is that she is a good ole Iowa girl. But don't let that country girl thing fool ya, she is a whiz at this stuff.

Thanks, Craig.

I still owe you an email about Pro Tools and what you need to get set up at home.

Kate said I must have scared you away with all that information about Source-Connect! Very Happy I hope I didn't scare you away for good.

Oh goodness sakes no Maya! I love that stuff. Yes I do have Pro Tools now and tomorrow I go down to KC and pick up my new computer that my boy built for me. Pro Tools for whatever reason was having trouble with my current computers configuration. So I sent him the info about Pro Tools and let him read through it and he put me together a puter that should handle PT very well.

Tell Kate that I will come to here for my demo when things clear out a little here. All the friends there at Sound Advice and Big House Productions are top notch and it has been a great experience. One that I hope I can build on in the future.

Best to you kiddo and everyone else in Chi-town,

Craig
Very Happy

No worries, Craig. I just realized we hadn't seen you around these parts in a while.

Of course I don't make it to Iowa too often anymore either! Smile But yes, my family is from there. Ackley, Iowa to be exact.

I'm finding that I am spending more and more time with each demo. When I started the folks taking me up on my offer were farily new to the biz but now the stakes are higher for most customers being fairly pro. At least some are going to agents. I am considering raising my demo fee to $75. Does anyone think that isn't a fair increase? It takes me about three hours to do one. If there is a big backlash and no one will want one at $75, LET ME KNOW and I'll keep it at $50.

I had NO IDEA when I made the initial simple offer to help newbies that I would be doing this many for such talented people.

Colin, I'll take that as a personal compliment, since we just spoke not a minute ago! God, I am so deluded! Wink

I understand the hard work and time that goes into it. How about upping your price for those of us who get steady work, and keep it lower for the hopefuls, since they may never get work? Sorry to be so blunt, kids, but that's the way it is. (as long as you keep me locked-in at $50! hahaha!)
