Every mic has to have a pre to work. What do you mean "direct in?" If you mean direct into the PC sound card than that is your pre.

Mine is a USB in. I don't think it uses the sound card for line in.

I use an Apogee mini-me as my traveling mic-pre. Coupled with a decent phantom microphone, I have been able to do gigs from hotel rooms on ocassion.

My main mic pre in the studio is the Millenia STT-1. It's actually a channel strip with both tube and solid state capabilities and a very sophisticated eq and compressor/ expander. I also have a Drawmer MX60 front end and a Focusrite red as mic pres and if I needto have more than one workstation cranking, I'll use my M-AUdio Firewire 410 both as the front end for M-Powered Pro tools or for a completely seperate workstation.

Fora long time, I used a presonus and a flying Cow convertor going into an old card (A Layla I think)

Just using a little Behringer Eurorack ub1002fx. It has phantom power, but I use a dynamic mic that doesn't need it.

My new MacPro has 2 firewire 800 and 2 firewire 400 ports; I should probably do something with them. Cool I've been looking at the M-Audio Firewire 410 which would make a good portability solution. But then of course I'll have to invest in a MacBook Pro. Hmmm.

It may be time to buy stock in Apple. Wink

My main pre is the Avalon M5. Nice and clean.

George, on your USB mic... then it all happenes inside the mic. Mic diaphram, preamp and analog to digital converter all inside the mic itself.

George, You buy some real equipment with all that voice over money coming in... LOL. Seriously, if you ever get to the point where you want to get some good stuff, consult me, I can point you to good stuff on the cheap.
