Collin,

Regarding the 286a. The compression function is not as extensive as the symetrix 528E. There is no parametric eq....hence no bandwidth adjustments. I can't seem to get the punch I'm looking for with the compressor, but the gate and epander are great. I've got some noise in my studio and I can gate it to DEAD SILENCE without squashing or clipping the audio.

I'm using an older Focusrite Voicemaster Pro. My condenser mic goes in and then the signal goes to my M-Box 2 on the line in input. The focusrite gives me better control than simply using the built in pre's on the m-box. I can achieve a variety of sound with this set-up.

John, I don't know what I'd do without the parametric. More than anything, the EQ helps me sound good. You said "no bandwidth." Do you at least have the freq. settings in each band?

Collin,

On the dbx itself, there is only low and high boost. I set the low mid and high freqs on my mixer and then adjust the hi low boost on the dbx. Go to sweetwater.com....search dbx 286a then enlarge the pic. Should give you an idea of what the dbx286a has to offer.

Well... I'm glad I spent the extra bucks on the Symetrix. I love to boost about 4k to "punch" through, among other freqs.

I use the Brick - it's wonderful. Only down side, it's as heavy as its name implies...

I use three pres simultaneously: Behringer Ultragain Pro-Valley 401 and
Empirical Labs EL8. Each has a distinct sound that compliments one another. Happy VOs to all.

I use DBX Model 286A. I'm still not quite comfortable with the quality. Problably I need to play more with the settings. Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks!

Overlook the product-specific info and learn the basics of voice processing in this manual...

http://www.symetrixaudio.com/repository/528EmanF00.pdf

...apply to what the 286a has as equivalent controls.

Alesis Multimix 8-Channel. I could do better, but it'll have to wait for now. Sad

I'm also probably one of the few using a Studio Projects B-3 mic. We have a great music store here in town, just teaming with musicians - and you know what they say, ask a musician if you want a real-world answer.
I couldn't afford the Neuman, and even Shure was a bit above my price range, so in the interest of economizing I got the Studio Projects. I guess Berringer would be in a similiar price range. Nonetheless, the B-3 is fine.

If I had to use a dynamic mic, I would have gone with the Senhiezer MD421. I've worked with them, and the venerable Electrovoice RE 20, and while the RE 20 is warm, there's no presence on its' own. I use one at work and hate it. The MD421 has at least some presence to it, is bullet-proof, and it's pratically impossible to overload.
