The sound card is a Sound MAX Digital Audio I beleive. I use a DELL and it came with my system. The mic I am currently using is...(ok, don't sigh) is a basic head set from Target... Embarassed I bought it just to get a feel and see if it would work... OH, I know it is not a good thing.

So, now that you have more particulars is the Shure SM58 still a good choice? Is it best to buy these mics on line or should I look at one of my local music/sound stores?

Ebay has lots of them. Now that you said what you have...go ahead and get a better set of headphones that cover your whole ears. You can get those at Radio Shack or music store. With the mic, pop screen, and headphones you should be good to get your feet wet. Your Sound Forge software is great. Sooner or later you might want to upgrade your interface from that sound card...however, this new set up will be good for a while.

Thanks Vic,

I guess my concern is that I feel like my feet are already covered with water! LOL I know how to audition, blah, blah, blah. Very Happy
My concern with my equipment is that I know I am competing against folks with in home studios and great equipment. With the basic set up I have do you or anyone else think that I am at a disadvantage?

I do have access to a inexpensive studio when I do land a job.

Hi Heather,

I use an SM58, connected to a PreSonus TubePre, then into the computer. Also use SoundForge. The SM58 is pretty tough, and can also be used as a stage mic if you perform.

Since your mic should be suited to your voice, you may want to go to a local music store. If they are nice, they'll have some advice, and may even let you try before you buy.

But if you know you want an SM58, there are plenty of on-line places to get it cheaper (e-bay, musicians friend, etc).

In any event, my setup works for me, your mileage may vary...

Hope this helps,

Heather...knowing how to audition is the toughest thing.

Most of the folks with $5000 home studios don't know how to do that.

Including me.

The others are right. Start cheap and add things as you need them.
