Ok gang - I need some advice.

Just got a call from a lady at Golden Era Productions. If that doesn't ring a bell, you should know they produce audio/video for the Church of Scientology.

Not to knock anybody's beliefs, but I personally think they are a potentially dangerous organization (for a variety of reasons).

So, do I call back, and garner money for a cause that I am opposed to?

What's your take?

Joe,
I certainly understand your dilemma, but it sounds like you've already answered your own question.
If it were me, I would have to say no for the same reasons.
I think we all need to figure out where our lines in the sand are going to be drawn.
But in the end, I don't think it's worth it.

Joe, if it is causing turmoil now, how do you think you'll feel after you work on their project.

Do 'Golden Era Productions' only produce for Church of Scientology, or do they have other clients that are not religion based?

As far as I know, they are a branch of CoS - here's what Wikipedia has on them:

(I'm saving for a trip to the compound!),

Then Joe, you have to go with that gut feeling. You know, that small voice in you head that says don't do it, but we have a tendency to ignore because we think we know better, and later find out we should have listened to ourselves in the first place.... I should know I was an expert at it for many years!!

Do you whore yourself out? or stick to your morals? You can't put a price on morals if they are real. Personally, I am convienced they are a cult and the biggest, organized group of hypocrites in the world. Rolling Eyes

Not out of amorality or general ambivalence, but I would take it, Joe.
You're a voice actor; not a moral beacon.
And, anyway, you'll not be connected with the project in the same way as an on-screen personage would be.
If we're to sift potential clients through our own personal filters, where does it stop?
How do you know the degree of skullduggery at a certain bank? Do you do ads for used-car dealers? I think they're largely contemptible.

You're a working voice actor. This is voice work.
They're accredited by the US government and tax department. They're not a criminal organization.
Put your personal beliefs aside and take their money.

Or have them call me.
Beliefs Off!

Is Scientology a bad thing? I know they have negative views on modern medicine, but then medicine isn't an exact science by any means and I don't think they preach harm or intolerance (which leads to harm). Taking the job would depend on the script, but I don't think I'd absolutely turn it down. I voted yes for balance. Have you seen the script?

I think there are probably a lot of misconceptions about Scientology. I probably have a few myself. The fact that you're not sure, tells me you should probably take the job. When something goes against your grain, you simply know it. There's no doubt in your mind. So, morally, I would err on the side of income. Sorry if I sound too practical for some sensibilities.

Joe;

The fact that you're asking the question indicates to me that over time, you will regret doing this job. As you know, when you voice anything, you become the voice of that product or service to the listener. It's your voice urging them, however nicely, to do whatever.

Yesterday I reached the “milestone” of more leads deleted than leads answered. That's partially because some of them don't make the grade for the same reasons you’re troubled by this.

Well, Nikki...I guess we're just morally bankrupt.

I agree - I love the discussion so far.

Part of my problem is that I'm capable of seeing both sides...

As for "Is Scientology a bad thing?", check out this link for more info:
Operation Clambake

Having had personal experience with these folks (my first "class" in Hollywood was at the Celebrity Center, and Kirstie was outside at the restaraunt!), I can honestly say that the brainwashing, money-for-nothing, and false expectations are a reality. As for the kidnappings, torture, and other charges, many of the leaders of the CoS are already in jail. Germany refuses to recognize them as a religion, and I believe they are also moving to ban them all together...

It's like any acting, business, or religious sc. am out there... If they want your cash first, buyer beware!

Yes, but where do you draw the line? Is it money that draws it for you or morals or what? What if you get asked to do a Coca-cola spot and promote it to kids? You know kids shouldn't drink it because it not only makes them fat but it rots their teeth...but do you do it because coca-cola is SO mainstream that it seems "OK". What if you were to get $5000 dollars to do it? We're in this bsuiness to make money...but...don't want to make the kids fat and unhealthy and have my name associated with it. However, coca-cola has been around forever so maybe it is "ok"...such the quandry!
