Well, that's that....
I shut off the Oscars when neither Sid Whatley nor Colin Campbell nor I were even considered for the Sound Mixing category.
Gotta love the awards season. With all those shows multiplied by the number of categories, I hope my fellow voicers realize that there are about 3,677 big winners over the next five weeks.
And we're not among them.
In fact, aside from the cancelled Golden Chords, we're not even considered for any.
But it brings me back two years ...when I did have the great joy of being in Aspen, CO when 'Hatley High' had four nominations at the US Comedy Arts Festival, including Supporting Actor.
I knew him. Really well. Still do.
He likes Moosehead. Nice guy. Talks a lot.
We won Best Director and Best Screenplay, and the whole experience was unforgettable.
I was in the men's room with Robert Redford.
Simultaneously, I mean.
Accidentally.
They didn't serve Moosehead.
My career's been downhill ever since.
Now, I can't even get a $200 gig shilling jewellery for Sid's Discount Baubles.

I often feel that the academy gets a kick out of awarding awards to films that hardly anyone but themselves ever sees. Often times the largest audience for most of the films are the academy themselves judging them worthy or not to receive a nomination.
I would much prefer to be able to watch the SciTech Awards than this self indulgent back slapping fest.
And also, I thoroughly enjoy listening to Don L doing his thang. |

..and that was really illuminating just now to listen to (superstar) Tom Cruise doing a 2-minute tribute to Sherry Lansing for Lifetime Achievement or something.
I was cringing at the voiceover part of it...
He's one of the world's top-paid actors....and I could think of 2 dozen talents right here who could have made that sound much, much better.
And the Don was there. Why'd they let Cruise drone through it?
It ain't WHAT you know, folks...

Okay, granted, ya hafta be another weird classical musician type to really get this one, but on the off chance that there are a few other classical singers let outta their cages here....
The Academy Awards often remind me of Anna Russell's comments about opera lectures: "Usually given by grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat experts, for the edification of other grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat experts...."
And you're right, Keith & Robert: it ain't what you know, it ain't even who you know, it's who you've------

Well they screwed up this year. They went and let Algore in the back door and they will not be able to take this one back. Just like the Nobel Prize was screwed once they gave the prize to you know who and you know who. So will the Ocars.
This was my last year to watch. I will watch reruns of The Simpson's, Family Guy and American Next next year. |

Keith, I LOVE movies and curling up with a good DVD may be the second most fun thing my wife and I enjoy doing together
But I can not tell you the last time I watched the Oscars. It's been at least decades. I'm serious. I'm so over the overblown and dragged out pomposity of the whole elitist thing. It's just friggin' entertainment, folks. Just like overpaid ball players. As of this writing on Monday morning after the Oscars, I can't tell you any of the winners or, for that matter, even who or what films were nominated. As usual. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

The big Award show was last night??? And, I missed it----again! (for about the 20th year in a row). Well, Rats! I do have a good excuse for missing it this time. I was trying to fix my electric can opener. All this gunk was stuck to the blade you see and it wasn't opening the cans correctly. The gunk was a buildup of Eagle Brand Milk that my wife and I use to make Christmas cookies every year. I had this burning desire for some tomato soup last night and the darn can opener wouldn't open it.
I'm really kicking myself this morning. I didn't get to see all the "Stars come Out" for a lousy can opener! I've got to re-think my life. |

I don't generally watch award shows.
Oh, sure, I'll occasionally catch a part of one, or see an interesting bit the day after...
Maybe it's too far removed for me.
You can do something. (life)
You can watch someone else do something. (sports)
You can pretend to do something (acting)
You can observe someone else pretend to do something (movies)
You can view a show that talks about people who pretend to do something (awards)
For me, it's like watching the post-show for a special on fishing...
Off to live,
Joe J Thomas
