Todd....I did. I didn't until Brad's step by step instructions above, and I thought surely that would do the trick....but it didn't.  Thanks, tho.
Well, Brad....I guess I'll have to. You know...I'm so new at this, I'm still trying to determine the difference between turds and cherries in general. So...E-mu's cards are up to snuff, then? And where should I search to find something from them at a good price? BSW?
Are you sure the problem lies within the sound card, or is there a possibility it could be something else?

| Brad - agreed. The E-MU 0404, however is a great little card on a budget. The balanced in/outs are solid as is the dongle.

Lisa ... please don't take offense at this ... Are you SURE you are talking into the correct side of the mic? I only bring it up because I have seen it happen before ...

Colin....I'm hurt. I simply ADORE all things pink. But...for you....ok. I'll choose something else. 
Todd...actually I thought of that too. The mic I used at the NPR station was "side sensitive" like that. And yes....I tried every possible position with the mic aside from upside-down while standing on my head....it didn't help.

The Echo Audio Mia/Midi is a solid pro card as well. I use one and have no problems with it. It has balanced TRS I/O. Runs about $129.00.

| this is gonna stun ya ... but sumpin is BAD wrong. i'm not even convinced you're plugged into an "in" Does the channel your mic is plugged into have a mic/line switch?

I don't see a mic/line switch. I'll post the pic of it again here to kinda explain where i'm at a little better.
Ok...mic is plugged into the very top left port. The levels on the mixer board look real good. Every time I type on my keyboard, it registers. But when I try to record on CE, what you heard is all I get. Everything is set where Brad told me to set it.

have you tried moving the mic to another channel? say ...4? changing out cables? do you get levels if you try to record from a cd player?

Robert, you bring up something that I had to bring up. For those of you who noticed, I wasn't around for quite awhile around here. I have to mention what was going on with me, for reasons I'll tell everyone in a bit.
I have found my better half in this world. I have an incredible lady who I have somehow duped into falling in love with me. 
But seriously, I was enthralled by this girl, and she fell head over heels not only for me, but my work behind the microphone.
So everything's wonderful, right? Not exactly. I live in eastern Oklahoma, and she lives in Lexington, KY. Yes, the distance is always difficult, but we were working fine through that hardship.
I invited Kris to Thanksgiving to meet the family and just get to spend time with her...then tragedy struck. She was in a major accident on her way to see me. She was thrown through the windshield, and miraculously, had few injuries beyond two cracked ribs and a bruised chest.
Well, the prayers of real thanksgiving were answered for her relative wellness...then the following week dropped a bombshell. While being checked out, an irregularity was found in her breast.
The tests came back, and the unthinkable became truth. My baby had breast cancer.
Needless to say, my life was turned upside-down. I began losing all motivation for everything in the world, including VO. I spent 5 hours a day on the telephone with Kris...keeping her spirits up (and mine), and just talking to her ease my frazzled nerves.
I slipped into depression because I couldn't be with Kris because I was broke...since I wasn't working...and I wasn't working because I was afraid of losing her. I know it's hard to justify the catch-22 funk that I was in, but I was in it, nonetheless.
I began dropping by the forum here...just lurking. Not really doing much except reading. I'd post once in a great while, but before this past week, I honestly can't remember the last time I posted. But I followed how the prominent members of the forum were still helping out the more fledgling (and not-so fledgling) talent. I followed how some of the fledgling talent became pretty salty vets (as it goes on here), and I longed to be back. But I just couldn't get back, mentally. Since the accident, Kris has tried to get to Oklahoma on 4 different occasions, and each of those times, something has happened. I sunk further and further into self-pity because I couldn't be there for Kris. I prayed. I prayed some more. I begged for somebody, anybody...to pay forward some kindness that might help me either get to Kris or pull me out of the black hole I had found myself. I racked up $600 in cell phone bills for keeping in touch with Kris. I knew I needed to work...but nothing. I kept reading, and Kris mentioned going to Vegas next month. I felt doubts. And then I found myself longing for the fun that I had every day firing up the studio and cutting loose. But something still gave me pause. I guess I felt like Rocky in Rocky III. I felt like I lost the edge.
Then I woke up last week. Something within me said to get up and record something...anything. So I did. And it was atrocious. But I laughed at how absurd it sounded. And I visited the forums. And I saw the Don LaFontaine thread. And immediately I fired up the video of Pablo Francisco doing his impersonation of "The Don." I laughed my ass off. I mean a deep, soul-cleansing laugh that made me feel good. I ripped off my impersonation, and posted it in the thread. And then I ripped off 4 more auditions. And I posted them. And I felt good about them. So good that I put some in the DotD forum. I felt better. That brings us to today.
Well, Kris is still sick, but she's moving to Tulsa so she can be close to a Cancer Treatment Center of America, and to me. I believe that now is the time to refocus myself. And I feel like I've started doing that this past week.
Robert's post about helping each other brought back these feelings of how appreciative I was (and am) of all of you, and for everything that you did for me over these last few months, albeit unknowingly. I believe that I am free of the doldrums that kept my motivation locked away, and I feel more at ease with myself. I want to fully get back the edge I lost and I want to succeed again. Because I know that Kris would kill me if I let myself go like I have been.
So, regardless if this the place or not, or how off-topic this is, I wish to give all of you my humble thanks. My thanks for showing that this place really is a place of learning and motivation, and that I had to sink very low to be able to appreciate what I have, and the promise of what I could have in the future.
My thanks to you all. You all will no doubt never fully understand how grateful I am.

Nope, Todd....that didn't work either. All still registering nicely on the mixer, but not in cool edit.
I wonder if its not in the line out going into the computer. They instructed me at the music store where I bought the mixer to go down to radio shack and get a stereo mini plug to 2 1/4" plug. So...I did, and the guy down there gave me, instead, 2 cords that I had to combine into one with some little adaptor that plugs into the computer...its hard to explain.
And to be honest....I've been jacking with this thing since 1:30 this afternoon. (Its 10:30 now) And I'm tired. Think I'll go to bed and worry about it in the morning. I will check this thread first thing though when I get up, though.
