I'm so excited.
After a very-good past 3 weeks, I just ordered an almost-new NEUMANN U89i, from a business associate. It's in remarkable condition.
Any thoughts on what I can expect?
I'm currently using an EV RE-20.
If you're using one...or ever have, I'd love to get your opinions.
...and thanks in advance! |

JC:
I haven't had any experience using a U89 in a voiceover situation but years ago, I laid down some vocal tracks for a series of music demos that a producer was having recorded to pitch some songs to A&R people with various record labels - and it was amazing!! The mic was better than anything I'd ever sung on before (and probably since.) It's been said - and is very true - that you can't draw a singular conclusion that any certain mic is better than any other certain mic, that the best mic for you is the one that makes YOU sound best, regardless of the brand or the price......but I can tell you, in all my years of using mics, both in the realm of live & recorded music, as well as the years I spent in broadcasting and now, to a lesser extent, in VO, I'd rate the U89 as absolutely one of THE best microphones of all time, at least for my voice. I suspect there are many others who would share a similar opinion of this microphone!
Ed Gambill, along with several others here, are much-more qualified to discuss various microphones, including the U89 - I suspect you'll be hearing their very-knowledgeable input shortly!
Congrats on landing "the big one!!"

it's a nice mic, and on many female sources I've preferred it to the U87AI. Both are good, but the U89 is a bit more even in the mids.
That said, you're not going to know whether you like it or not until you try it out... mics are a personal thing. |

David & Greg...thanks for the replies.
I really am looking forward to using the mic, and from everything you said(and that I've heard), I shouldn't be dissapointed.
I'll post when I finally get it & use it.... |
