Well I haven't posted any of my auditions on here as of yet, but I think I'd like to start. Such a great supportive community on here, so I can't WAIT to get ripped to shreds!
Anyway, they were looking for a "real" sounding western accent for this auto company. I ended up doing it a little more excited about the deals they might be offering, but I thought of possibly doing it much more laid back, what do you guys think?
I'll also post this thing I did yesterday for an in-store camera security system. They wanted an authentic NY or NJ accent and four different takes on the read.

Aaron... I will say this... "in aisle eight" sounds like "anialate."

Ha, you're right about that Colin!
I guess in my attempt to score an authentic accent i sacrificed a bit of diction.

This wasn't a lead through V123... just an ad I put together for the station I work for... but I had a lot of fun doing it and thought you might enjoy it.

Maybe he's a Dalek.
And before Scott gets the chance, it's spelled "annihilate."

Lee... damn... didn't have dictionary.com up when I wrote that. BTW... I've been holding back on Mr. Pollak's punctuation. It goes INSIDE quotes and parenthesis. "Ha!"
Dave... did you write that? Very good.

Colin-
Thanks! Yeah, I wrote it... although I wasn't sure how to spell "bock, bock". The chicken is actually our receptionist, Judy. It was hilarious to have her in the studio acting like a chicken.

Isn't radio production great? "Let's see, we need a female voice.... you know Betty Sue over in Sales has a neat voice." Been there, done that.

I love invitations like that, Aaron, and since it's the only one I have this New Year's Eve, I'm doubly happy to oblige:
I enjoy your intros/slates, when you're being Aaron Phillips. I equally dislike the rest of the reads. Aside from the annhilation of the aisle eight-tion, you swallow the last part of Customer, and realy ended up with some bizarre and unidentifiable accent there.
Similarly, on the auto deals, you sounded to these ears quite a bit like somebody sounding quite a bit like somebody imitating a Southern dialect.
It's different if you're doing a Himalayan yak-herder: there's few genuine ones around, so you have a lot of leeway. But to try a Sourthern yee-haw cowboy when there's oh, about 400 real ones here is a risky proposition.
In perusing your web site, I believe I read something about your being an exceptionally versatile talent with dozens of character accents. You can get away with that at the company picnic, but you're up against other real pros here, Aaron. It will only disadvantage you to make claims you cannot back up. You claim a solid Aussie accent, for example. But there are some three dozen real Aussies working out of V123, and you'd be hard-pressed to match them.
My suggestion for 2008 is that you lay claim to being the best Aaron Phillips you can be.
Then work from there.
That may be dull, but plodding along one step at a time wins the race here.
All the best for the new year. Hope to hear lots more from you.
(Now, I think I heard a Moosehead calling me.)
Lombardo On!

Aaron, I'm never one to comment in this forum b'c I personally don't feel I have the experience to tell another VO talent how to sound. Howerver; since you were aiming for the NJ/NY accent, this is right up my alley. (no pun intended)
The whole "customer service, isle eight" read on all takes just sounds forced. It doesn't sound like an authentic New York/ New Jersey accent. It was a great attempt though!! But as a northern NJ girl who went to college in Yonkers and worked in NYC...I can tell that you're not from that region.
I'd suggest listening to my step mom's voice mail, but because this forum is public, I can't post her phone number.
Accents and regionalism are hard to duplicate unless you have professional training in acting. One way to help you is to listen to people who actually come from the area you're trying to mimick. Movies like "Mystic River", which take place in Boston, are full of actors that aren't from that area, but they nailed the accent on the head. Those actors have yrs of training and went out of their way ten fold to sound Bostonian.
Watch episodes of The Sorpanos. There's a reason why they taped that show in New Jersey. Most of the actors are from the NJ or NY area.
The hardest thing to do is getting rid of the NJ/ NY accent, not duplicating it. So you're major steps ahead of everyone else. Good Luck!!!
~Ally~
