How to set up FTP for file transfer

I have noticed many people use FTP for transferring files large or small. How do I set up this system on a mac? Please remember I am technically challenged, so take it slow and make it simple in the explanation.

Hi Lynne,

What I have done in the past is upload the files into the client's ftp - they get me a password to let me in, and off I go. When I was sort of looking into it a while back, I found it would be easier and cheaper for me at this point to go that route.

Through a service provider much like you would with a web site.

Scott, thanks, that's helpful to know, So can you break those steps down, how does that work... I am sorry to say have no experience in that area, only attach an mp3 etc to a regular e-mail address.

When you've finished recording, you can save it however you like. Sending it to their ftp is pretty easy...they give you the url and the password to access it, then you just send the files there.
It's really pretty easy, and it's best to have a super-fast internet connection so it doesn't take forever. Even though I have DSL, it still took quite a while for me to load about 20 minutes of spoken narration .wav files to their ftp.

Good point about the time to load larger files, I will have to remember not to use the wireless connection, at times it has been dodgy. Again thanks, helpful info.

Lynne - I use SmartFTP there is a free version www.smartftp.com - BUT you have to have a server on which to host your files. Google is your friend - search for free file hosting!

Being more of a "do-it-yourselfer" I have an old server I inherited from work that sits in my basement and serves up FTP for my clients using the built-in Internet Information Services from Microsoft. I love being able to send them a link to click on to get their files direct from my own basement! It's cool.

BTW, I just learned recently that you can make it easier for clients with this syntax:

ftp://user:password@myftp.com/Client

With this you don't have to explain a user name and password, it's just click and go for them. I have gotten some "very professional" comments on this in the past. I email an .mp3 and inform them that a "higher quality" .wav file is available at...

Hi Lynne,

If you have a website (not a page on V123, but a website that you have hosted elsewhere), then you have FTP space.

Ask your webhosting provider for the username and password.

You'll need an FTP client to access it. For Mac OS X, I recommend Cyberduck:

For webhosting services, I really like Obsidian Hosting. Their customer support seems to be top-notch. http://obhost.net

I used to use Dreamhost and as much as I like those guys and their employee-owned philosophy, there was just tooooo much downtime. You can only go so cheap on webhosting before it starts to show! I mean, take a loot at http://dreamhoststatus.com and look at all their downtime before deciding to go with the them.
