Kathleen and Allen,

That does sound better. Thank you very much for the help. I've decided to rerecord and try to eliminate the plosives. The noise reducers seem to have helped.

I've been reading this exchange only because one has to find something to do in those few precious, non-recording seconds we have every day, and I have to say that (MAUDLIN ALERT...MAUDLIN ALERT it's a reflection of the best of this business and this forum that you would all take the time to so patiently help out here.
I mean - when you think about it - you're basically helping out the competition at no profit to yourselves.
That's pretty cool.

Hey Sara,

On board sound on a laptop is probably the culprit, along with impedance issues with your dynamic mic....you really can't plug one of those things into a laptop and expect good sound.

First, try unplugging the laptop and run it (record) on battery - you'll likely find that the power supply is feeding back through the soundcard.

Software....is NEVER the problem when you have a constant "buzz." Software merely records it's source - and presents that source to you in all it's digital glory.

Software problems are usually clicks and drop-outs not associated with the source signal.....I think someone mentioned those little "icons" in your system tray....a good starting point for that sort of stuff.

With your computer running, hit ctrl+alt+delete and have a look at whats using up your CPU processing - you'll see the System Idle process at the bottom. If it's less than 90% or drops way down....one of the processes above it is taking up CPU usage.

Identify and shut off.

Consider getting a soundcard with a Firewire/USB interface. Also consider getting a cheapo Behringer mixer to pre-amp that RE.

Good luck!

Hi everyone,
Really need help desperately. I just started recording and use Audacity, which was too noisey so I bought an E-MU 0404 soundcard and my XP Home Edition 2002 does not recognize it. Tech installed all and all appears to be in working order but my drive is not reading it.

ANY SUGGESTIONS!!

On the side: Was so excited about the home studio set up, although very noisey, I had the nerve to record a job from voice123 submit it, heard favorably from the client....didn't get it but great feed back. I am very encouraged, but oh my, no sound. Being patient. Help.

THANK YOU,
Nonie

Hey Nonie,

I'm not sure what you mean...doesn't read my "drive?"

Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio devices. Click on the Audio tab.....and make sure that your E-MU soundcard is selected as the default Playback and Recording device.

If you don't see it in there, right click on My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager and check to see if your soundcard is installed under Sound Video and Game controllers.

Start with that.....
