Freddie, you're going to think I'm an idiot.

For those of us who don't know Spanish, I thought I'd share. I never ran into this before:

I just did an IVR for a company's satellite office in Portugal that they wanted voiced in English. Many of their prompts went something like, "For accounting, please press 2, and then the number sign, now". I asked if they would rather have me say, "Please press the pound key", and the client told me there is no Spanish word for # , and because "pound" has so many universal meanings (hash mark -UK, for example), weight measurements, etc., it is very confusing. There is a visual Unicode symbol for No., but not the actual word.

So if you are ever asked to say "the number sign", don't question them!

I will never.

Anyway, that is correct. There is not an specific word for the "pound" sign in spanish, all IVR´s say: presione la tecla numero para mas opciones (press the number key for more options).

Weird ha?

Yeppers - plenty of symbols have multiple names...

Here's what I call some of 'em:

# Hash mark, Pound key, Number sign
~ Tilde
() Parens
{} Braces
[] Square-brackets
^ Caret
/ Slash, Forward-slash
\ Back-slash
' Single-quote, Apostrophe, Foot
" Double-quote, Inch
` Back-quote, Back-tick

... how about if I just turn on my web cam and point to the one I'm talking about!!!

Cheers,
Joe

I remember the first time I found out that the "co" in .co.uk was pronounced "coe", not "see-oh". Thought that was interesting.
