My setup goes like this:

AudioTechnica AT3035 Condenser Microphone
Behringer Eurorack mixer UB1204FX-Pro (loads of effects to choose from, if I needed them)
P4 2Ghz, 2.50GB RAM, Cool Edit Pro for editing
M-Audio Delta AP192 Soundcard
Sony MDR-V300 Headphones (and some Beyer DT150's but I don't tend to use them)
K&M Pop Killer (if you haven't got a pop shield, get one! Remarkable difference since I bought one)
High quality cables (never underestimate the investment of decent cables)

That's my lot. You don't need to spend masses on quality, just shop wisely and ask for discounts, you'd be surprised how many companies will Smile

Adam

Newbe here!
Great forum .
Here is my chain:
KSM44 mic.
E-mu 1616m pci.
Pc I built myself: AMD athlon64 X2
2gb ram
2 wd 250gb hds.
and Adobe Audition 2.0.
I also have an M audio Tampa pre amp, but hardly use it, because
the 1616M has it's own pre.
The whole thing cost about 3k, but it took 2 years so it didn't hut that badly.

I love it .. but you better have good sound proofing, the damn thing is so
sensitive I can clearly hear conversations 3 rooms away. and needs a good pop filter too. However I believe it is the strongest link in my chain.

I've got the 32 and agree on all points. Good mics. I wondered how the 44 differs.

Well besides the really neat aluminum case, different shock mount, and think it's a little bigger, it has lower self noise, 3 different switchable patterns, and lower self noise, even lower than Neumanns.

You guys, what a lot of great information!

I am wondering, however, if any of you are using a mac. I am seeing alot of adobe audition and know that doesn't function on mac.

I have two questions:

1. What are the most important parts of a set-up?

(I use a surebeta 58a, m-audio mobile preusb, and garageband.)

And, 2. what are mac users preferred editing softwares? (and, how important is the software versus hardware?)

Thanks a bundle!

Important in the set up - Room, mic, pre-amp, soundcard

The critical component is the mic and yours is not ideal for Voice Over work. A good buy to begin with would be this http://www.studioprojectsusa.com/b1.html

I am a dedicated Mac user. I use Cubase, Nuendo, or Logic, depending on who I am working with and location (have friends who are serious Nuendo users, but that program is very expensive)

My setup:

ADK TL Microphone (I love's me some ADK!)
Joe Meek cheapie microphone (I use this whenever I have to do a quick remote spot)
PreSonus Firebox
Ibanez DM1100 digital delay (warmest digital delay out there and you can score 'em cheap on eBay)
M-Audio Ozonic Midi Controller
Reason Adapted or Garage Band for simple jingle loops if I need them

I anyone else out there using MIDI controllers as an interface? I've not seen a lot of that and they are so useful.

Another Mac user here.

The flightdeck consists of:

Neuman U87
Apogee Mini-Me
MacMini for voice recording
Digital Performer 5
Mac G4 Dual 1Ghz Tower for production and editing.
Acoustic control using Acoustic Sciences Corp panels and stuff

Maggie... that's a tall order. I will say this. If you are going to buy headphones... GET SONY MDR-7506. $99. You cannot beat them with a stick.

Mic placement is tough. I use an upside down condenser up above the flow of plosives. Crisp, clear, no mouth noise (well, very little anyway.)
