I'm also with John.

If there's ever a question... I ask.

For the final product, I'll add some light editing and processing (EQ and compression) and offer it alongside the dry track.

While most of my clients like the finished work, all appreciate having the dry track available for their Engineer to work with.

depending on the audition i might clean it up a bit or i might not - but with a paying gig - it's always 12 O'Clock on everything and completely un-processed. my clients seem to like it that way.

Personally I have a little compression between audio interface card and recording software (but that's more to prevent clipping than anything) then depending on the read maybe a touch of noise reduction, de-clicking and occasionally taking out any 'unnatural' sounding or overly heavy breaths.

I try and keep it as natural as possible personally and the latest noise reduction on Audacity 1.3.x is very sweet indeed!

With thanks to Robert, Brad, Ronald, and Colin (among others), I've started adding some light compression to my audition voice tracks. I have to say, I'm pleased with the extra "pop" they seem to have as a result. Thank you for the solid suggestions. And thank you, September, for starting this thread.

Bob S.,

This also shows how you can never stop learning new things if someone with your experience and ability is up for a new trick or two. I'm not sure how you could sound better!

For my $0.01 (I don't consider my opinion worth 2 cents) I've also done some sort of companding every time. At least enough to drop the floor down to invisibility in case of a stray background sound or two, plus give the voice a bit of a punch.

Charles,

Thanks for that excellent link. There's a ton of great stuff there, not just on compression.

I do some minor filtering. I record demos with some compression (seperate unit, not Audition) Like the other young lady I to am asthmatic and need to drop breaths about -20db every once in a while. Plus, you're auditioning. If I was client I would want to listen to these techniques. It shows me something about that talents skills and interest in the product. Keep in mind, I don't do this every time. It does depend really on the projects key information. It tells you whether you need to spend additional time tweeking this sample.
