LOL! that's actually not mine (though I do own one).

It was an image sent to me by a friend and I loved it as a wallpaper on my computer and as an avitar.

Between you, me and the wall. I prefer my voice on the 77-DX compared to the 44. That said, I think that the Horch will eventually be conisdered as a classic (despite the hype, it's no clone of anything I've ever heard... though it's close in some regards to the U49 in universal mode) and has quickly become my favorite.

Now if only I could finish my new work area (though I've finished the desk and started racking the gear... shouldn't be long now Twisted Evil )

Well, first you got my attention with the U87....but then, I see you're using DP5....so I'm DOUBLY-green with envy! I've been thinking of moving up to Digital Performer myself (have been using Cool Edit Pro in the radio stations where I've worked) but I, too, have always been a huge Mac fan. I had a Power G3 before moving to an iMac a few months ago. I'm running Parallels, which allows me to use WinXP on my Mac - but the only reason I do it is because I'm so adept with Cool Edit Pro, I didn't want to completely take the plunge to new editing software I wasn't familiar with. In addition to voice work, I'm also a singer/songerwriter/musician - so I'm particularly interested in DP5 for it's midi capabilities, too. I was involved in recording a couple of albums a few years ago, back when the whole idea of recording a complete studio musical project into a computer was first emerging (computers have come a LONG way since then.) But I remember the studio owner/engineer/producer (who was ALL Mac) used Digital Performer, in addition to a host of outboard hardware. I know that DP5 is supposed to be an incredible piece of software - and judging from your demos, it sounds awesome.

Of course, your voice - and that U87 - don't hurt things, either!

I agree the Horch is more a bastard than a clone, with an outward appearance of a U49 but the guts of a U49. And I expect you are right it will some day have higher cult status. I had considered getting something from Tele USA but went to John Peluso’s lab instead, visited awhile with John and bought 3 matched 22-251 (inspired by ELAM251). I am a fan of the C12 Cap design. I have also a AKG 414EB (C12 cap)

While there I heard samples he had of TeleUSA U47(vf14 tube) and his 47 inspired mic and there are too close to call. Then 2k for his verses 7k for theirs makes it a easy call regarding money.

So anyway you mic snob. Very Happy lets us hear some of these bad boys. I don't have any first hand knowledge of 77 but want to hear what other 44,s sound like. You are the only one who hasn’t participated in our little demo

Question for you people who have voice processors. Where do they sit in the chain ? What do they do for you that the recording software does not ?

Of course, if you used a MAC, you wouldn't have to worry about those pesky drivers and all the other things that work just half-*ss!

I use a combination of hardware and software processing. The hardware gets me to 95% of where I want my final recording to be, with the software giving me that other 5% - and for sweetening. Having a radio background, though, I am learning that there is a LOT of VO work that doesn't require an incredible amount of processing - for a number of reasons that I won't get into here because that's not the purpose of the thread. My processor sits right in the front of my audio chain, well, just after the mic, of course! From there, it goes through my mixer and then into my computer.

Interesting thread. I am just getting started with a home studio for VO.

I am using a Shure SM7B fed into a Mackie Satellite, recorded on Mackie Traction.

I have a porta booth set up in my hotel room.

The mic gain is cranked all the way up. I am supposed to get a Presonus Eureka tomorrow or the next day, hopefully that will give my audio a kick.

I just got two new pieces of gear this last week. I bought a Studio Projects B1 to replace the Samson C01 (woohoo). I ended buying an M-Audio Delta 44 card as well. I think I might try and run the Delta alongside my RME for the time being and decide later on down the road if I'll continue using them together or if they'll both end up in different machines. Hopefully I'll get some free time here soon to actually sit down and play with the new stuff.

Well, I told myself I was going to take the day off but I couldn't resist since I just got a new mixer and I couldn't help but wonder what leads I had been missing (likely all of them...ha).

Anyway,

I'm still kind of unsure about this processor, anyone have a good thing to say about it? I've actually bypassed it on a few occasions but the damn PC makes too much noise (have yet to buy myself some extension cables so I can put it in another room) and I can't find a setting in audition that will eliminate the hum/engine noise so I'm kind of stuck with it for now...

What a great source of information! I've got less than $1000 to spend on a VO setup. I already have my PC. Right now I'm thinking:

Shure KMS27 - $299
MBox Mini - $295
Sony 7506 Headphones - $89
Various Accessories (Cable, Boom...) $100
Total = $783

I am familiar w/ Protools, though I've only seen one person using the MBox in their chain. I don't have any other software so I'm thinking the MBox is the way to go since Protools is included. The other usb preamps don't seem to come w/ any good software. Any suggestions or recommendations?
