Get called in? Or always done at home?

I'm wondering if any of you get called in to studios after auditions on here, or if they always want you to record the whole project yourself. If so, do you do all the editing and mastering? Background ambience?

Sometimes a lead here will specifiy a location. We frequewntly see Los Angeles or New York pop up. This generally means they want clients located in that geographical area and they will ask the talent to go to a recording studio to record the job.

Otherwise, the leads will generally expect the recordig to be conducted in the area wherethe actor is located. More and more often, this is the actor's home studio. Although there are actors who only read for projects that offrer pricing structures which allow to pay for a professional studio to be used.

The recording session may involve the client wishing to provide direction either thrugh an ISDN line (some talent have this) or through a standard phone line. This enables the client to direct you while you are recording. Afterwards, files are sent via FTP, email attachement, etc.

ISDN lines allow for the client to record on their end and is performed in almost real time. I wouldn't worry about this for now, just be aware that it exists. You can find plenty of information on ISDN lines on the internet and in books. There are other alternatives to ISDN that are emerging as well.

As for editing, etc. the requirements are different from client to client, but in many cases, the client will want files edited and recorded to some sort of specification (volume or normalized)

Just make sure you arevery clear as to the clients expectations. There is a very big difference between performing a 3 minute corporate read and sending the raw session files, vs. having to edit one or more full clean takes. In many cases, editing and/or name filing conventions can take significantly more time than the recording itself.
