Yes, it is true and I admit it.
I am that guy that used to own a bar and wrote and recorded my own radio spots. Everyone said "Dude, you should be on the radio."
Knowing how hard the radio business is and how crappy the pay can be I decided to jump into voice acting. Sounded easy enough, all you do is read............ right????
WRONG!!!!!!!!!
I have been trying to teach myself this art (lots of VO Savvy reading and webinars) and have realized that you all are very talented group and this is not easy.
(By the way, the RMOG thread is too funny. Thanks for the laughs.)
I would like to get help with a few questions that I am having trouble with and if I do get answers I promise not to be "that guy" that auditions for every single lead and sells my voice for $10 a spot. (Although a $75 Hundai spot would be nice or the fiddi fi spots....lol...)
Here goes:
1. Where do you get background music for the demo
2. Where can one find scripts to use that do not sound generic or violate copywrite laws.
As soon as I learn enough about my MBox and ProTools I will record a demo and post it for you all to critique.
I promise to use this knowledge only for good and not evil. I also promise to attend classes at the Denver Center for Performing Arts as soon as a class for VO opens up. (Unless someone knows of another option in this neck of the woods).
I hope the new year brings you all the best.

I see you've been paying attention to the board quite a bit...you knocked on the door, entered, and even took off your shoes. hehe, quite the diplomat.
It seems you have the right approach and hope you do well. I'm a freshman in the biz too so I'll be learning right along with you.
A couple of quick answers though: many people have different websites for music. I picked up some stuff from Digital Juice--keep a lookout for frequent sales.
For scripts, Anthony Williams occassionally posts batches of scripts--PM him for more or do a search. Usually just listening to radio/TV spots for basic template scripts--just sub out words for your own. I find the talk radio stations have a great variety of spots. Others on the board have suggested magazines with various and brief ads/scripts.
Hope that helps for the time being.
We'll see you around.
Cheers,
Cameron

Kyle -- You may have missed a golden opportunity. Since you once owned a bar, it is a virtual certainty that several of your regular customers were in the advertising industry. You should have cultivated them as contacts in order to advance your career.
I am here to tell you that the most important asset you can have in this business -- more than good recording equipment and the skills to use it, more than a killer demo, more than premium memberships at Voice123 and Voices dot com, more than award-winning dramatic prowess, even more than a great voice -- is connections, particularly well lubricated ones.
