I'm reading some books now, and saving up for classes. In the meantime... I want to write some copy to practice with, is there some sort of format to follow or do I just write fake commercials? Or is there a place I can get scripts from for free? Thanks!

The easiest way would be to go to your local library and photo copy ads from a variety of magazines. Ones from home will be good but probably very similar. The library will have magazines that you wouldn't normally read and their ads will vary as well.

What James said is the best way to educate yourself. Other ways to practice on a day to day basis are to read billboards, sides of buses, and any public display of advertising. This works well when you're in the car by yourself.

You can also practice by listening to spots on the radio, then practice how you would deliver that same ad. Don't do this with the local commercials. Practice with the national/ network ads you hear. Since you interned in radio, you'll be able to differenciate between the two. The local ads usually come first in a stop set and the network ads come later.

"Billy Bob's Bar & Grill on 8th street" for example is local.
"Turbo Tax" is national.
