Travis, you're becoming one of my new favorite voices. You have a marvelous delivery. It's sort of a nice balance between an old-school announcer and a real pro documentary voice talent. You have a very pleasing tone and texture, good pacing, and empathy. The ONE single thing is that, listening through headphones, there's SOMETHING about this recording that almost sounds slightly flangey in your voice (not the mux). I'm not a techno-geek, but the vocal quality had a slight ring behind it. Did you add any sort of FX to your vocal track? |
I want to echo what Scott says here. Love your voice, Travis - and love what you do with it. Great interpretation of the copy, on this one and every other one of yours I've listened to here on the forum. Of course, you're in great company here with the likes of Mr. Pollak, Mr. Wilkins, Mr. Jadah (damn, I shouldn't have started this - you always leave somebody out!) But you get my point. Good stuff, Travis!

And I have the extreme pleasure of knowing Travis in person. He and his lovely S.O. live in the next county - although in California, that can be quite a distance. I see him at MCA-I meetings on occasion - well, either that or parties!

That's some kind of elevated company you've put me in there, David. You're too kind, especially considering I'm a SmartcastAway who - it feels like - hasn't posted anything since those ads for Super Bowl IV.
And I'll take some small credit for bringing Travis out of the cellar, by the way. I stumbled across his page, loved his sound (I have a weakness for sweeping reads) and slowly cajoled him to share his stuff.
Meanwhile, I am still droning away. Herewith, from my dormant TOS account.

Yeah, Deby, I did get the Hershey -- but I deleted it -- just wasn't comfortable with my parrot. Yours is impressive!
I love all these narrative reads tonight -- my favorite kind.
Travis -- you've been quite easy on the ears, gotta say! (so thank you for getting him on the boards, Robert.)
Your artist read, Robert, was quite soothing. Painted lovely pictures in my head. (you know, you must feed your head -- oh, wait -- that was something else...)

I love the tornado reads! If I didn't get into radio, my second career choice was meteorologist. There's something about nasty weather that excites me. All were great, but but the SFX Thom used added the right touch. Made me want to get into the cellar!

First off, since when did being a SmartcastAway somehow diminish your standing in this community?? Anyone who's been around here any time at all knows that you are one of The Jedi. Nuff said!
I guess TOS is where I'll be auditioning for awhile...my one-year "love affair" with 123 came to a screeching halt, as of today, and I haven't renewed it. Don't know yet if I will.
Drone away!!

There you go! Your audition on the Pest Control rated better than mine did. Oops! I promised not to mention ratings any more. |
David:
I went back and found your post here so I could reply to it again, since there's an update. You remember I posted that I had done the "Cat" audition and had gotten a "4?" Well, I'm perusing through my outhouse..........er....outbox today and I noticed where they had changed their rating to a "3!" Why do they do this?? Why does V123 allow it??? Once we submit an audition, we can't go back and re-submit a better version......or if we rate a lead, we can't go back and re-rate it! That just chaps my ***.
Hmmmm.....did I mention I didn't renew my "premium" (sic) membership with V123 when it expired today??

Thanks kids (blush) ....
I really appreciate your comments ....
Robert, yes it was you who "cajoled" me into here - Thanks!
Connie, always good to hear from you (For those of you who don't know Connie, she's one of the TOP VO performers in Southern California.) Patricia, the "SO" Connie refers to, has been active lately on the "Voice/Throat Care" thread in the "Pros" section." In addition to being a voiceover talent, she's a music and voice teacher with years of experience, and she must've read a couple'a hundred books and papers on the subject of voice care. Gotta find some more room around here for those things.
Scott, David, David, Diane, Thanks! Always appreciate being appreciated.

Erik:
So, the Cat People are on the prowl again! I caught them on the second audition. (see a couple pages back) Since then they've modified their instructions, probably based on ideas they're getting from us. The last time, 200 auditions were requested and they cut it off at 125, probably after they realized that a 'squeaky' voice wasn't the only way to go. But, the instructions are a lot more helpful this time. And even though the budget has gone from $3000 to 'to be determined' for eight :30s, I hope I get another shot at it.
David O:
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Your '4' rating went to a '3' because the seeker was using the system as originally intended, to prioritize the submissions. Because another submission was deemed more appealing to them over yours, your rating went down. It's supposed to be so that the seeker doesn't wind up with a dozen '5's and can't recall at a glance which was the favorite.
Last week in this forum, I had vowed never again to question ratings, but I'd like to discuss this dynamic. If the rating system is supposed to have some significance, and if used as outlined above, how can the ratings have any true meaning? Let's say it's the Miss America contest and it's down to the five finalists who all received a '5' score. (Let's say all of the other contestants received a 'not rated') Now the last five are judged. Four of the five must be downgraded from a '5' to something less. Does that mean that the runners-up are not attractive, poised, talented, intelligent, etc.? No, it means that they have just fractionally less of those qualities than the winner.
I propose the seekers have another method of sorting their auditions. The 5 thru 1 method is fine for scoring each audition, but when they are sorting through the cream of the crop, how about a 5A, 5B, 5C, etc. system only for the seeker to use that has no bearing on the talent's score? This way, the talent's score doesn't get diminished for no valid reason.
Computers are amazing things, should be able to do it.

September--
Well, I'm not surprised! You nailed it. Just the right tone. You have the perfect vocal quality for those types of reads -- young, AND elegant.
Congrats!!!

You're perfect for that, September. Congratulations!
But, I'm going to bet they'll have you say "PLAH-zuh" instead of "PLAZ-uh". Let us know, OK?

Congrats September!!! I knew you'd get it after I heard your audition... and you said you got a 5. I have a hard time remembering that young can be elegant too... they seem to be opposites for me.
Yup, my guess is they'll want "PLAH-ZA" too! I can't recall if that's how I said it, or Ember said it, or not!!
I haven't heard about the Windows gig. It was only a 4, so I'm guessing someone got a 5.
Deby, I did get that Hershey's thing but I deleted it. I think b/c the price was too low for me for what they wanted. I can't recall exactly though... I'd have to go back and look at the lead. Good luck with it!!!!!!!!!!!!
