The ART Project Series USB will do a nice, clean job with you're
SM7B. I've used that exact combination. You would have to spend much more many to beat it. I also still have a TubePre, and it is noisy on a dynamic mic. For $99 the ART will get you in the game.

Post a sample when you get it. Good luck.

I like it, Todd. Makes me wish I still had my K2. Very clean.

Well, I traded the ADK Hamburg II AU that I posted a sample of 2 days ago for, gasp, a TLM103! Seems that a lot of people just don't like the TLM103, but I thought I'd try it out again. It's another mic I used to own, but didn't like at the time. (Bad room acoustics, etc.)

But now I love it! At least compared to the Red Type B, the ADK, MKH416, Neumann BCM104, RE-20, SM7b, Cascade Fathead and CAD M179. I still have the CAD too. I think it's a great utility and 'in a pinch' mic. Especially for $150. I actually like it a lot better than all the mentioned mics other than the RED, though I would like to have another SM7b again. Most of these are mics I've had and then sold or traded in the last year or so on the "VO mic for me" search. I'm actually pondering trading the Red for an sE Titan as a few people have suggested that mic for my voice.

Anyway, back to the point. Here is a sample of the TLM103. I think this is a keeper!

Hey John! I love the AK 47 over the 103 on you...but I noticed that it did some weird brittle snaps on your "F"s. I say weird because you aren't forcing your Fs out at all. It does suit your voice better though...enjoy it!

Josh...good trade. I like the 103 better than the ADK.

Hi Lance,
Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. I think I forgot to put the "brittle F snaps" filter inline. It's ffffixed now.

Thanks Lance.

I dig the Tele too, John. I've heard many good things about both the AK47 and the M16 mkII, and for good reason I'm now finally hearing with my own ears.

Hi all,

I would think that this is the most basic set up of all on here, but I've had no complaints so far, so how does it sound to you?

M-Audio Luna Condenser Mic
M-Audio MobilePre 2 channel audio interface
MacBook Pro 10.5.2

That's it!
No compressors, no limiters, no pre-amps! I will add compression to voiceovers, but it will be the standard manual compression in Garageband. The sample I've posted is the raw sound of the mic.

Please do take time to listen as I would be very interested to hear your thoughts and of course, take any advice on board!

Many thanks

Hey Darren,

I do hear some P popping, but it sounds good to me. Especially for the price of the gear. Nice rich low end. A little darker than I prefer personally, but definitely usable from a producers standpoint.

I think the fact that you have such a quiet and dead studio helps too. That is something many people overlook, a properly treated room. The best gear on earth will sound like crap in a bad room.

Your sample goes to show that you don't have to spend a WHOLE lot to get a decent sound. Although, better gear will be that much better. Smile

It's not much, but it's all paid for and it seems to work okay for me.

Josh, thanks for the reply mate. I'm not in a studio as such, just a small 'office' room with a mattress and a duvet behind me to deaden the opposite wall and a duvet right behind of the mic as I'm talking into it.

I guess you're right though, I think the mic is worth around $200, so clearly it ain't a Neuman, but it'll do for me!

Hi Darren,
I think it sounds good too. You might want to use a popper stopper and you should be set.
Good luck!
