And now for the one question that is actually relevant to Voice123:

Why is it that the seekers who are paying the princely sum of $30, $50, or $75 for a voice over are the ones who give the most detailed (as in micro-managing, not providing useful information) instructions and require 2, 3 or even 5 years experience?

I open everything SmartCast sends me, just to have a look. And then, just as quickly, I close most of them. Every once in a while, however, I will run across an intriguing one. For example, today I got a lead for a job that pays $10. I'm sure there are others here who got the same lead.
On the surface it would seem like an insult, but this one was a little different. They weren't looking for a cheap voiceover for a commercial or even the internet. All they wanted was a large cross section of different recorded voices and accents to test the voice recognition capabilities of a product they are developing. The sawbuck was just a little "thank you" for taking the time, sort of the same way Nielsen gives certain respondents a buck or two for their trouble when they fill out a survey.
Besides the tenner, these guys are also giving each participant one of the products once it goes into production. They didn't reveal what the products is, but judging from the sample copy, I'm guessing it could be a voice-activated iPod-type device.
I still haven't decided whether to reply or not. So far they have gotten only 28 responses out of a requested 100, so I guess there's no big rush.

Why is it . . .

. . . that as soon as I crack the mic in my home studio, my neighbor chooses that moment to put on his straw hat, fire up his John Deere and bushhog his entire yard?

Yet another sort of on-topic philosophical question:

Why is it that seekers who are casting for a single voice to do several spots will post each spot as a separate lead rather than posting just one representative spot, picking a winner, and hiring that person to voice the whole shootin' match?
