OK geeks. I need your geeky brilliance to solve this little mystery.
I'm using iTunes to do my MP3 conversion BUT when I've set it at 96kbps, my voice sounds weird. (Yes, that's the technical term for it!  ) It sounds much better at 128kbps.
WHY? I'm so confused.

Esther,
the weird "spacey" sound on the 96 kbps-file is just typical artifacts of hard bit-reduction.
Different MP3-encoders uses different algorithms to bit-reduce the sound, some does it better at low bit-rates, others at higher rates. There's nothing you can do about it, other than either encode at a higher bit-rate, or try a different encoder.
Do you really need to encode to 96 kpbs? It's quite low!

Any reason you're using 48k? Why not 44.1? Switching to 44.1 will increase the quality of your 96kbps recording hugely. If you need to record at 48k, encode at 160kbps.

I encoded it the way V123 recommends on the Audition page. They say, and I quote:
"Please record a custom demo using the script provided and then upload it in MP3 format. Please make sure the file extension is .mp3 and the file size is less than 10 MB. We recommend normalizing the volume to -3 db and uploading files encoded with the following attributes: 44.1 kHz, 16 bit, mono, 96 Kbps."
So, good-little-girl-me has been following directions....and hating that "spacey" sound.
Of course, lately, I just said 'to heck with it' and recorded it at 128 kbps and the system hasn't slapped me on the wrist yet. Then again, when they say 96 kbps, did they mean 96 kbps mono = 192 stereo? Maybe I misundertood. (But that happens so RARELY! )
So what settings do you folks have for your MP3 conversions?

But you didn't save it that way...Your file is at 48 kHz, 16 bit, mono, 96 Kbps. NOT 44.1...Make that change and you'll like the results better. That's what I was talking about. My studio is master-clocked at 44.1, so when I played your file, the system freaked out. That's why I noticed that it wasn't right.

Oh WEIRD! I checked my settings and they say 44.1 kHz. I wonder why it's doing 48 kHz. I'm going to have to check with the Apple people. Thanks for letting me know!
