Here's some great news out of our own NJ here -- I read that through the Dizzy Gillespie Memorial Fund at Englewood Hospital more than $5 million in medical services are provided to jazz musicians who have no health insurance, 100 percent donor supported. Some people really do care.
And Dizzy here on another fave of mine -- THE MUPPET SHOW!!!

Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lings .... oh my ... remember that Morris Albert tune? i suppose singing is like VO.. y'know, a song or a script is sappy to the core, but w/ the right talent it can become a work of art...
The High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone, whom is one of my fave jazz singers, transforms "Feelings" from sap to a masterpiece (imo)

I heartily recommend the 2-disc "Ellington at Newport" that was (re-)issued in 1999 - - this was the night at the festival where Ellington's band went from being big-band-era leftovers to vibrant modern jazz orchestra, and revived their career literally overnight, thanks to a near-riotous crowd reaction to one of their old blues numbers. (this also made Life magazine and was quite talked about at the time, I have read)
The original 1956 LP, it turns out, was for the most part a studio recreation (BIG letdown when I heard about that - it was one of my first jazz LPs at age 15 and very influential) - but for this reissue they happened to locate the Voice of America tapes of the concert that were lost for over 40 years (the sax soloist responsible for the swingin' mayhem in the audience was playing into the VOA mic and not the Columbia mic, hence the solo always sounded distant) - So with the advent of digital editing, they were able to sync the 2 sets of tapes, and now presented the entire concert, ALL of it, in stereo for the first time (technically it's binaural), but the distance of the 2 mics does reveal some space that can easily be "read" as stereo.
The concert starts as just another date for Duke and the band, doing their "hits", one tune for the vocalist, etc....but later in the evening they did a 3 part suite composed for the Festival, which must have warmed em up - then he pulled out 2 1938 charts to be played back to back, but with a long solo blues in the middle of them from Paul Gonsalves ("Mex")...Round about the 6th chorus of his solo, one can detect some audience noise way off mic, when a blonde in a black dress jumped up and started dancing - in the middle of this staid, upper class, serious jazz performance (think the listening party scene in Jailhouse Rock) - - which builds and builds til the end of the 15-minute piece, when it is chaos - no fakery there...This famous track has been rereleased numerous times, but always with the cheezy 1956 reverb added after the fact...This set just kills all the way, great great stuff.
OK, I'm done _________________ Chris Mezzolesta www.voiceguy1.com SaVoa #07010

A brief threadjack here -- not jazz or blues, but on the subject of NJ....
Okay, John, in 1981, my brother Phil and his friend Joe, wrote this song about New Jersey. Recorded it, got some local air play -- and it even made its way to the State Senate way back when -- up for State song -- but didn't make it -- someone caught the joke, I guess. A couple of years after that, John Pizzarelli recorded it, updated the lyrics and it was requested at all his gigs, well... at least the ones in NJ.
Here's Phil's original version, with his band (Just found this on YouTube,so forgive the sound quality -- it's from the 45rpm disk, I gather. I don't know who posted it.):

Cool, Rajiv! Another jazz/blues fan.
(Oh, yes -- that John Lee Hooker song is one of my all time favorites. It cooks. And that's a great video as well.)
Now, I don't know if they are truly classified as Latin Jazz, but another group that I can't sit still for is Buena Vista Social Club -- there's a great documentary on them as well. Here's a hot one -- Candela.
