In Philly -- take the family for a walk in society hill -- which adjoins Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
It's a splendid walking tour in the east end of town.
--
In NY, I agree with the Toys R Us suggestion as well as FAO Schwartz and Virgin records is great -- but just a bigger version of what you have at home.
A walk down Bleecker street is very interesting -- but if you don't have a lot of time -- and you don't just a walk down Broadway is amazing.
You've seen it on TV a million times -- now there it will be in front of your eyes!
5th avenue shopping district is also amazing and Rockefeller Center all in close proximity.
Saint Patrick's Cathedral all dressed up for the Pope's visit.

Hey all... thanks again for all your helpful suggestions! We had a great time on the East Coast. The day in NY, we ended up doing one of the double decker bus tours which allowed up to hop off and on and see just about everything we wanted to. Highlights for us (although there are really FAR too many mention) were lunch in Central Park (I had no idea it was so beautiful), taking the Staten Island Ferry to see Lady Liberty, the NBC Studios store (too much fun stuff to buy... snagged a Mr. Bill keychain and a "More Cowbell" folder among other items), and our first NY taxi ride... see the cab driver picture below.
Other highlights of the trip:
Washington DC- WWII Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Museums, the Zoo.
Williamsburg/Jamestown - Such a rich sense of history... fun and educational.
Busch Gardens - witnessing my 11 year old daughter and my wife "DEFY THE 5" big rides... too scary for me.
Philly - Liberty Bell, Philly Steak Sandwhich, running up the "Rocky" stairs (personal favorite... what can I say...it's an Italian thing).
Personal - Meeting an Aunt in Jersey whom I've never met and meeting with Lisa Leonard (a wonderful voice talent who showed us around Philly). Canadian Geese everywhere... don't see those too often here on the Southern Oregon Coast.
I've attached a few photos for those interested.

That Tai Shan? He's so adorable. Had him as desktop wallpaper for a year. The other pictures are really great too.

There were 3 Giant Pandas at the National Zoo... Father, Mother and Baby... don't recall the names or which is which... sorry.

Bummer you didn't get into the Cash Cab... that could've totally been the highlight of the trip!
I love that pic of your little boy. Adorable.

Awesome pix Dave! Thanks for sharing them. Glad you had a great time on the East Coast. Amazing you don't see Canadian Geese too frequently. All they do is crap on our cars. Actually, north of the border, they're called Canada Geese. We Americans got it all wrong.
ITA Love the pic of your son and also the one of the Statue of Liberty.
Great camera!

So glad you enjoyed your extensive tour of the east coast -- now, take a vacation, will you?
(Seriously, we who live here take so much of the beauty, culture, energy, wonder and excitement of our environs for granted. The east coast does indeed rock!)
