We all make fun of bad local commercials, but these guys that I record often at work are such characters. It's a greenhouse called Baker's Acres. Here's there Mother's Day spot I recorded and produced for them today. The music is their original. These guys are a hoot.

"Show Mom you care... BUY her love."

....Oh... and another I did for them back in April.

Ya know Colin, I'll probably get shot for saying this but those local characters aren't that bad. Seriously. If you want to hear "bad", just listen online to www.kiss1017.com

From 10am to 12mid, the stop sets run at 38 and 48. (give or take a few minutes) The first two or three spots are local. If you hear my work, that's the awesome stuff. LOL Wink Eventually, you'll hear the baaaaaaaaaaaaaad local spots.

There's just something about local advertisers that don't take themselves too seriously. They just enjoy making obviously corny stuff. They are the most unassuming two fellows you'd ever want to meet. Just "salt of the earth." You know, the big AM stick they mainly advertise on isn't cheap but they just have fun doing the ads. I have one ad I have to find where they say... "hey, I paid for this, they told me I can say whatever I want." It's heart warming.

I'd love to hear that if you can find it in your archives. It's rare when you have a client who can actually do a decent job just by having "FUN" when they're voicing their own spots.

There are very few Carvel Ice Cream "Fudgy The Whale" wanna be's out there. Wink

Here it is. It's the 30 version of "Robustiness." I love how he says... "I'm payin' for this, they said I could do anything I want."

"Homespun" is the best term for it.

OH AND TOM CARVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember "Thinny Thins?"

And did you know that the Fudgy the Whale mold is the exact same one they use at Christmas time for Santa? They just turn it 90 degrees and decorate it differently.

Y'know what? I actually LIKED the Baker's Acres spots! The guy sounds genuine, friendly and down-to-earth and I immediately remembered the name of his company.

There are numerous advertisers in this town that like to use their kids in spots. Not just any kids, but kids with REALLY thick southern accents. You can barely understand a word they are saying. Smile

I can just see the look on the producers face. Very Happy

i can remember a few years ago we had a client whose agency insisted he voice the commercials. he did his own local cable tv spots, and wanted to keep the continuity. only problem was, he had an very thick italian accent. i mean VERY THICK. you could barely understand what he said. and the agency had him voicing a :60 radio spot. ok a line or 2 in a :30 second cable ad is one thing, but a :60 second radio ad? i swear i heard radios being switched off or onto another station everytime the spot played.

talk about bad advertising.

I've been working with a family of oriental rug dealers -- a father with a fairly thick accent and his two sons -- for 15-20 years. The father is aware his accent is a bit "unusual" and also acknowledges that they are not professional announcers (that's why they bring me in for the meat & potatoes like store locations and such). In fact, he embraces their amateur status and doesn't want the spots (except my part) to sound too polished. To that end, they'll sometimes select a take that may not have been quite as smooth as one of the others, just so they can sound more "real."
